To my best friend, who calms my fears and knocks some sense into me!

Long ago there was a little girl who learned to be afraid to try. She could not grasp how to play soccer or some of the other sports at Elementary school. Other kids knew how and were not afraid of playing. This girl was scared of getting out there in front of the others and failing. Sure enough, it was time for her to be put on a team. She was extremely confused as to what to do. The P.E. instructor didn't really teach it much and everyone seemed to know how. She was lost, but tried and failed. Of course no one ever wanted her on their team. She was very embarrassed. She wished she could kick like that blond girl!

She didn't like P.E. and sometimes ditched, but of course she could not get out of it completely. She kept trying even though she was always afraid. She then became older and went to middle school. P.E. was not any better there. The sad thing is, her parents were not really physical people who played sports or did any athletic stuff. Her brother played Volleyball, but did not play with her or show her how. She had the same fears and problems in Middle school and high school with P.E.

When she got to College, she decided to take basketball. She loved basketball, though she did not play except for shoot some hoops. She was still scared, but figured she would be alright. She barely started the first week of playing and then sprained an ankle. No one hurt her, the ankle just gave out and somehow It got sprained! Oh no, she felt like she was in grade school again. She could not play until it was better.

After the ankle healed, she was able to play again. Soon after this, you would not believe what happened. Another sprained ankle. She was horrified! She did not go back to class after that. She not only was very scared of playing sports, but now was afraid to break something anytime. She let that fear keep her from many other athletic activities for a very long time.

Years later, that girl met a friend who helped her learn a little more about playing sports. He taught her to not be so afraid, to not care what others thought and the correct way to kick or hit or run depending on the sport. She was far from perfect after that, but her fears calmed down. She still is back to trying things again even with the fear. She just needed a caring person to show her how to play and have trust in her to do it.
