Volcano Lui and Mr. Sun have had a very strong relationship ever since Lui was formed. They have conversations every day about how the world works and what makes everything so special. Volcano Lui looks up to Mr. Sun as a father. Mr. Sun sees Lui as a son. Every morning Volcano Lui is so excited to talk to Mr. Sun. This morning in particular is different. Volcano Lui grows curious about his past. He is eager to learn where he came from!

Mr. Sun... Where did I come from?

Mr. Sun Smiled. He has been waiting to explain to lui how volcanoes form. He also realizes it's a topic not many know about.

I'd love to explain Lui! I also bet this is a question a lot of kids would like to know because volcanoes are so amazing!

Lui is eager to learn about his past. Mr. Sun takes him on a journey to see all the amazing parts that make Lui, Lui!

Lui, do you know what plate tectonics are?

No Mr. Sun. What are they?

Mr. Sun: Plate Tectonics are the like puzzle pieces of Earth's outer layer.

They move around all of Earth's land and water sits on these plates as well. They are made of solid rock.

That's so cool! It's like a giant puzzle. But, how does this relate to me?

Great question! As the plates move, they interact at their boundaries in different ways...

How do they do that?

Mr. Sun: At one type of boundary the plates slide alongside each other. This is called a Transform Boundary.

Lui: That's cool...

Mr. Sun: At another type, the plates separate. This is called a Divergent Boundary.

And finally... at another type of boundary, plates will crash into each other. This would be called a Convergent Boundary. This is where you come from.

Lui: Yay!! Now I know I come from a convergent boundary!

Wait... how does a convergent boundary make ME, though?
