Bujang, the crocodile, was lying along the banks of the Rajang River in East Malaysia. He was enjoying the sun looking up at the clouds in the sky. He fell asleep and started snoring. His mouth was wide open and just then Gagah, the tortoise, passed by. He saw Bujang with his mouth wide open. He couldn’t resist. He took some stones and placed them inside Bujang’s mouth and crawled away happily.
A little while later it started raining. Bujang opened his eyes and started moving. To his surprise his whole body moved but his head remained where it was. He said, “Alamak!” He was stunned. He didn’t realise that his mouth was full of stones. After struggling for a while, he felt the stones when he closed his mouth, and, with his eyes half closed, he tried to figure out who would have done this.
“This must be the work of Gagah! I will take revenge on him for this!” he thought. He slowly dragged his face to the river and placed his head over the edge of the river bank. He opened his mouth and all the stones fell out of his mouth. He then slowly walked to the river and swam away, mumbling to himself and still feeling angry.
One fine day, Bujang was swimming around enjoying the sun..... again. He lay on his back with his hands behind his head, floating and blowing water into the air. He didn’t see Gagah swimming slowly nearby. Gagah knew that Bujang will not feel it if he touched his tail. So, Gagah went to his tail, held it and very slowly pulled Bujang to edge of the river where there was a waterfall. Bujang heard the waterfall but it was too late. Before he could say,"Alamak!”, he fell over the waterfall, screaming and he landed flat on his back.
He lay there at the bottom of the waterfall, looking up at the sky. He knew he was nowhere near the waterfall when he was floating earlier. Then he thought, “Gagah! You did this! I will teach you a lesson.”
One week later, Gagah was busy eating some young grass and leafy greens by the riverside. Bujang was swimming in the water and he suddenly saw Gagah. He thought to himself, “Ah Gagah! This is my chance to get you.”
He thought very hard about what to do to Gagah. Then he decided. He saw a papaya tree nearby and he planned to make a papaya fall on Gagah. Bujang quietly walked along the river bank and went behind the papaya tree. He started shaking the tree to make the papaya fall on Gagah’s head. It didn’t fall. So, Bujang pushed the tree harder ... but what happened was... the papaya tree started to turn and fall towards Bujang. It happened so fast that Bujang couldn’t even say, “ALAMAK!”. The papaya and the tree fell on.... Bujang. He lay there pinned down by the papaya tree... with his eyes half open.
Out of the corner of his eye, Gagah spotted something struggling not too far away from him. Gagah looked up and saw Bujang. He went to Bujang and burst out laughing. Bujang looked really funny.
“ Hey Bujang what happened to you? You look like a flat papaya tree.... and there is a papaya growing from your head. ”
“Gagah, I know you have been playing tricks on me and I wanted to teach you a lesson. I tried to push this tree and make the papaya fall on you. But, see what has happened,” moaned Bujang.
Gagah felt sorry for Bujang and he apologised to him for playing naughty tricks on him.
“I am sorry Bujang. I will not do naughty things to you anymore. Let me help you to free yourself from under the tree,” said Gagah.
