To all the people eager to learn

The Pasni rice feeding ceremony is a very important tradition done in Nepal. This ceremony is conducted when a child is ready to eat rice, but not yet ready to be introduced to salt. This usually occurs when girls are around five months old, and the boys being about six months old.

The families of the children decide when to act out this tradition based on recommendations from the Hindu priest of astrologist. Every relative of the child is invited to come watch the ceremony.
Before the ceremony begins the child is cleaned up and swaddled in a red towel, to signify the morning of his/her Pasni. The paternal aunt, also called Fufu is the person in charge of holding the baby in the first steps of the ceremony.
At the start of the ceremony a Hindu mark, also called a tika is placed on the child's forehead. Then the child is dressed in a red outfit, often times made of silk or velvet with gold and silver embroidery. During the ceremony anklets called kalli `are placed on the child. The purpose of these are to ward off bad omens.

The child is then given a dubo ko mala (Garland of Holy Grass) the feeding can begin. After the child is given rice they are then given a platter with a variety of Nepali food they can eat. After the child has eaten, they are then presented with a tray of symbolic, non edible items.
Usually this tray has a book, jewelry, a pen, a piece of clay, foodstuff, and any object to represent a career. All of these objects symbolize something for the child's life they will live out. The book symbolizes the learning that will occur in the child's life. The jewelry represents wealth. The pen stands for wisdom. The piece of clay is to represent property, and lastly the career related object could be anything from a stethoscope to a gravel.
