The main function of the Integumentary system is to act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world, protect us from diseases, eliminate waste, regulate body temperature, and retain body fluids.
Main layers of skin
The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.
The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.
1: Hair follicle, Help oil and condition the skin.
2: Sweat Gland, Is the excretory route for electrolytes and water.
3: Fat(Adipose tissue), Fuel source for energy in our body, and storage form for energy.
4: Connective tissue, Transport system for the inside of our bodies, for things like oxygen.
5: Blood vessels: Transportation system that moves blood throughout the body.
6: Hair Shaft, Delivers hormones that modifies how fast and long the hair grows and helps with structure.
7: Pores, They are used to lubricate the skin.
8: Nerve Ending, Sense stimuli originating from outside of the skin such as pain, touch, vibration, temperature, and sound.
9: Arrector Pili, Generates heat when the body is cold by contracting its muscles, also causing hair to stand up.
10: Sebaceous Gland, Produce sebum which waterproofs the skin and lubricates it on mammals.
11: Melanocyte, Helps with skin pigmentation and produces melanin.
12: Vein, Carries mostly oxygen and depleted blood to the heart.
13: Artery, Where blood that has been oxygenated goes.
14: Squamous Cell Layer, contains newly formed keratinocytes, which are strengthening proteins.
15: Basal Cell Layer, The basal cells continually divide, and new cells constantly push older ones up toward the surface of the skin.
