"A man speaks only when driven to speech by something outside himself - like, for instance, he can't find any clean socks." - Jean Kerr

Spending his Saturday morning looking for a missing sock was not the way Cane wanted to begin the weekend. He searched all over the house but couldn't find the other white sock. It was his turn to do the laundry so he emptied the dryer and didn't notice that one of his socks was unaccounted for. He double-checked for the dryer and laundry room but his search came up empty. "Oh well, no big deal. It's just a sock."

Cain was ready to resume the rest of his chores when an intense red-headed man appeared. "I guess you could say, one can never have enough socks." "Why would I say that? Who are you and how did you get in my room?" "I'm Detective Bobby Sox from CSI." "Crime Scene Investigation? It's only a sock." "No, Captured Sock Initiative. We believe that somebody has stolen your sock and is holding it for ransom." "That's ridiculous." Cane scoffed. "We have a 96% rate of finding socks that have gone missing."

"Alright kid, let's go!" "Where are we going?" "To find your other sock. It must be terrified out there all by itself." "It's just a sock. I can always get a new pair." "Nonsense!" Sox shouted. "First a sock goes missing then it's your good luck underwear. Whoever stole your sock knew what he was doing. I've seen a lot in my 10 years on the job. It changes you in ways you'd never expect. I won't get fooled again." "Did I mention it's just a sock!" a frustrated Cain declared.

The pair pulled up to an old warehouse in the industrial part of Miami. "What are we doing here?" "I got a tip off the Missing Sock Hotline." "They honestly have one?" Cane said as he rolled his eyes. "Listen kid, this might be some kind of joke to you but for me it's personal. Have you ever had to watch as someone has to identify one their missing socks with a big hole in the toe or heel? It's very emotional." "Geez, this guy is a real keener" Cain mused to himself.

"Cover me! I'm going in!" "Huh?" "Alright, just follow me. Now if I were a sock, where would I be?" "I'm sure it's somewhere in the house like under my bed, mixed in with other laundry....." "You're talking foolish kid. This is my investigation. I know you're worried sick about your sock but we will find it." "I'm not worried actually. I rarely wear that pair anymore." "Shh! I know you're trying to put on a brave face. It's okay to be afraid. I think I spotted something."

"Well isn't this interesting?" "Did you find the other sock?" "No, but I think we have our first clue." "A clothespin?" "I believe that whoever stole your sock wanted us to find this clothespin." "But I didn't hang the clothes outside. I put them in the dryer." "He's playing games with us. Oh, he's good. He has us right where he wants us." "Who? What kind of person goes around stealing one sock?" "A very dangerous person. This is going to be a lot more complicated than I thought."

"Let's take this clothespin to the lab for closer inspection." "The lab?" "Dr. Knee-Highs, I need you to analyze this clothespin we found at the old sock factory on the outskirts of town. I don't want to rush you but we need the results pronto!" "I'm on it Sox. You must really be scared about your missing sock." "Not really. I usually wear sandals in the summer anyways" Cane interrupted. "Don't worry. This nightmare will be over soon. I'll get right on it Sox and will call once I find something. Hang in there kid." "I'm fine actually." "So brave" Sox remarked.
