The History
Weeki Wachee was founded by Newt Perry, a former U.S. navy seal, who cleaned out the spring after years of trash and waste were being dumped into it, like refrigerators. Perry saw the beauty in the spring and enjoyed exploring the 407 foot cave systems. Weeki Wachee got its name form the Seminole Indians who named it after "little spring." Perry explored underwater breathing with air hoses during his early time spent at the spring. His discovery is what has led to the infamous mermaid shows Weeki Wachee is known for today.
The Facts
Weeki Wachee is so deep, that the bottom has never been discovered!
Each day, 117 million gallons of water is pumped into the springs.
The refreshing spring stays at the perfect 74 degrees and bubbles up from the subterranean caverns below.
Sixteen feet below ground lies a theater room that was built so viewers could see the natural beauty the spring had to over.
Attractions
Weeki Wachee had its first show on October 13, 1947. After recruiting many young, pretty girls, the main attraction was the magical mermaid shows that were viewed in the theater room that was built into the limestone of the caves. In 1959, the spring was purchased by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and was heavily promoted bringing in many. Shows like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan were performed by the mermaids.
In 1988, the Buccaneer Bay WaterPark opened near by, bringing yet another attraction to the Weeki Wachee spring. Today, visitors can take a boat ride, rents canoes, and experience animal shows!
