For: Intro. to Scientific Inquiry

One day, Randy and his three friends were playing in the park with their new toy cars. They had gotten them at school from a real race car driver who had come and talked to their class.
The boys spent the afternoon racing their cars down every hill they could find to try and see whose car was the fastest.

By the time it was time for the friends to head home, each of the boys' car had won a few races, so they still couldn't tell whose car was fastest.

To solve this problem, they decided that after school the next day, they would come back to the park and have one big final race to decide once and for all, who had the fastest car.

His whole walk home, Randy was thinking of what he could do to make sure his car was the fastest and won the race.

He figured he would ask his mom for help when he got home. After all, his friends never said he couldn't ask for an adults help.

When Randy arrived at home, he found his mother carrying groceries into the house from the car so he ran over to help her out.

As Randy took two of the bags from his mother's arms, he told her. "Mom, my friends and I got new toy cars today and we're going to have a race tomorrow to find out whose is the fastest!"

Randy's mom seemed very excited and asked if there was anything she could do to help his car win the race?

So Randy asked, "Mom, do you know anything that I could do to maybe make my car go faster?"

Randy's mom told him that what we use to make the car move is called Force. She explained to him that when you put enough force on something, it will move.

She told him that, with his race car, the Force used to make it move is the push that he gives it at the top of the hill. The car doesn't move until Randy pushes it, which is the Force to make it move.

She told Randy that the more Force he puts on his car, the faster it will go down the hill. This made sense to Randy. He thanked his mom for her help and ran to his room to test it out.

Randy pushed his car over the floor of his room many times. He pushed harder each time and watched as the car got faster and faster. Now that he understood that more Force made his car go faster, he knew he was ready for the big race.

The next day felt like it went by so slowly because Randy was so excited for the race after school. Even though the day felt slow, Randy found himself noticing people using Force all around him.

At recess, he watched his friends on the playground and saw how they used force. He realized he used Force everyday but had never noticed it before!
