Galileo was born in Pisa in the year 1564.

He was the first of six children, two of whom died in infancy. His youngest brother would go on to be a royal pain in the arse for some time. Asking for money and such.

Galileo later went on to have three children, all of them illegitimate. He had these children with Marina Gamba. The two daughters he sent to live a religious life at a convent because he didn't feel that his illegitimate daughters were eligible for marriage. His son was later legitimized and was able to marry.

Galileo Galilei is famous for his contributions to Astronomy, Mathematics, and his inventions. He pioneered the telescope, he was a major proponent of Heliocentrism, and he discovered the timekeeping potential of pendulums one hundred years before the first pendulum clock.

Galileo was persecuted by the Church for his ideas about Heliocentrism. He was forced to recant his statements and he was brought before the pope and sentenced to house arrest for life. Supposedly at his sentencing, he muttered "Eppur Si Muove," meaning "and yet it moves."

Galileo's legacy lives on in his inventions. Particularly the telescope, which has changed the way we view our place in the universe. He showed that we are not in fact the center of the universe, through his astronomical work with the moons of Jupiter. He has inspired generations of scientists.
