This book is dedicated to my one and only puppy, Leo. I love you even when you don't listen.

This is the Brumley family. They are from a small town called Aubrey. Mr. Joe is on the left, and he builds houses of all shapes and sizes. In the middle is Mrs. Paige and she owns her own store. On the right is their daughter, Emily, who is in elementary school. Emily is so excited because her birthday is on Friday! She cannot wait to eat cake and open her birthday presents.

It is finally Emily's birthday! She invited all of her best friends to her party, and her mom got her her favorite flavor of cake, chocolate with strawberry icing. Emily couldn't wait to dig in. Her mom lit the candles on the cake, and then all of her friends sang her happy birthday. As they were singing, Emily made a wish and blew out the candles. Then, Mrs. Paige cut the cake and gave everyone a piece.

After everyone finished eating cake, it was finally time for Emily to open her presents. Emily began opening the gifts from her friends first, and then she opened the big present from her parents. It was a puppy! Emily could not believe it. She had been asking for a puppy for forever, and she finally got one. "His name is going to be Leo," she said.

After asking Mr. Joe and Mrs. Paige for permission, some of the kids went to the backyard to play with Leo. Emily's friend, Chloie, stayed inside for a little bit because she wasn't feeling well. Emily found a tennis ball, so she and her friends took turns throwing the ball to Leo. They were all having so much fun running around and playing with Leo. You could tell Leo was enjoying it too.

Chloie started to feel better, so she went to the backyard to join Emily and the other kids. When she opened the gate to walk in, Leo darted out of the backyard super fast. Chloie stood there in shock. She felt so bad that he got out. Emily told her that it wasn't her fault. Then, Emily rushed inside to get her parents.

MOM! DAD! Leo ran out of the gate!!
Emily ran inside as fast as she possibly could. Her dad had just gone to get his new book from upstairs and was about to sit down and read. Her mom had just walked in from the kitchen after cleaning the dishes. Emily's parents could tell that something was wrong, so they asked Emily what had happened. Emily told her parents that Leo had ran out of the gate. Her dad said that he would help her look for Leo and that her mom would stay at home with the other kids.

DAD! THERE HE IS!
