My inspiration for this story came from Jack and the Beanstalk along with celebrating St. Patrick's Day this week. I thought I could put a fun twist on the classic fairy tale and reimagine it with the luck of the Irish. I decided on this idea while talking to my mom about fractured fairy tales the students in her class enjoy. She told me of one that was an African take on the little red riding hood but with a lion instead of a wolf. That gave me the idea of doing a leprechaun instead of a giant and making it a shamrock instead of a beanstalk.

Once upon a time there lived a boy named Shane and his mother. They lived in a small cottage on a potato farm in Dublin, Ireland.

Shane was very hungry but his mother was too poor to buy food and the potatoes were rotten.

Shane's mother had an idea to make some money. "Take this basket full of potatoes and sell them for no less than five coins."
Confused, Shane said"But mother, they're rotten! No one will buy them."
Strictly, she told him"Do not come home until they are sold."
So Shane took off through the hills, basket in hand. "No less than five coins, no less than five coins, five coins...five coins" He repeated to himself, unsure of how he could get anyone to buy the potatoes.

A witch appeared in the woods, frightening Shane and blocking his path.
She pointed towards Shane, "What's in your basket, little one?" her voice cracked like branches in the wind, sending a shiver down Shane's back.
His response was shaky,"I'm on my way to town to sell these potatoes, for no less than five coins."
"No need to be scared! I was actually looking to buy some potatoes" The witch croaked and reached into her pocket, "In fact I would trade your potatoes for this four leaf clover"
Shane was confused, "What would I want a leaf for? I need money! Not a plant."

"Now this isn't just any clover," The witch continued. "If you plant this leaf a larger one will sprout. Bringing you riches!"
Shane was convinced, why get only five coins for the potatoes if he could have riches from the clover?
"It's a deal! Here are all the potatoes." Shane excitedly grabbed the clover and took off back home. Silly witch, he thought to himself, she just gave away riches for old, rotten potatoes.

Shane returned home and gave the clover to his mother.
"If we plant this, we'll become rich!" Shane exclaimed.
His mother was furious, "You gave away the last of our food, for a leaf?" She snatched the shamrock and threw it on the ground.
"Go to bed, no dinner tonight, you awful child."

While they slept that night, the shamrock grew...and grew..and grew. Up into the sky where only the stars could see the top.

Shane awoke to a giant stem outside his house. He couldn't even see to the top!
In awe, Sean thought to himself.
"Maybe I can climb it, the riches must be up there."
So he began the climb, higher and higher...
Until he was up in the clouds.
