This is Marla. She loves cupcakes, roller coasters, and animals. Her dislikes include spiders, homework, and most of all- RAIN.

Upset about the rainy day, Marla’s mother helped her to come up with several ideas for making the most out of it.

"We could either build a fort, watch a movie, read books, solve puzzles, or even bake a cake!" suggested Marla's mother. But none of these ideas appealed to Marla. 

Fort building? Movie? Puzzles? Baking?

No!

After rejecting all of her mother's ideas, Marla & her mother agreed on taking a trip to the grocery store, even though Marla was still upset about not being able to play outside in the sunshine. 

Walking into the grocery store, Marla's mother gave her a small chore to complete. 

"If you'd like to earn some extra money from chores this week, you can return these plastic cans & bottles into the machine in that room right over there!"

Marla's mother pointed to a noisy room filled with dozens of machines. Marla couldn't believe how many ,machines were in the room!

Marla's mother turned to her and told her, "For each bottle you return, you can earn 10 cents back."

 This comment captured Marla's interest, and made her even more eager to learn more about these mysterious machines. 

Recycling Center

Marla's mother explained that the machines are called bottle deposits, and they are where we can recycle empty bottles in exchange for money! 

"But how does it work?" questioned Marla.

"It's quite simple, really." insisted her mother. 

From her mother, Marla learned that the big machines are called "reverse vending machines." These machines take in most plastic cans and bottles through just inserting the bottle into the small hole in the front of the machine!
