A creative and scientific story investigating the apparent motion of the Sun!

It was a warm and beautiful day in Summerville, Pennsylvania. Annie and her family were having a picnic in their favorite park as they watched the sunset.
As the sky was painted with all different colors of the rainbow, Annie turned to her parents and asked, "why does the Sun disappear each night?" Her parents, with big grins on their faces said,"I think its time for an investigation!"

The next morning, Annie woke up very early to watch the sunrise from her bedroom window. As the Sun slowly made its way above the horizon, Annie quickly grabbed a notebook and a compass from her desk.

Observations:
Sunday:
Sunrise at 6:26am in the East

Annie recorded the time that the Sun began to rise and what direction in the sky it was coming from. Annie was so excited to finally begin this investigation all by herself!

Annie changed out of her pajamas and ate some breakfast before playing at the park with some friends. Full of excitement to keep gathering data, Annie brought her notebook with her to record where the Sun was in the middle of the day.

After playing tag, Annie and her two friends, Emily and Matt, ate some popsicles to cool down. Annie told her friends about her new investigation, which they thought was so cool! Eager to get involved, Emily and Matt helped Annie record her next set of data into her notebook.

Observations:
Sunday:
-Sunrise at 6:26am in the East
-Sun is high at 12:00pm in the South
Annie and her friends recorded the data in her notebook. Once they finished their popsicles, they went back to playing for a few more hours, enjoying the nice summer day!

It was time for Annie and her friends to go home and eat some dinner. Annie's father came to walk her home and told her that they were having pizza for dinner. "Yum, my favorite!" yelled Annie.

Annie's family enjoying their yummy dinner. Once they were finished eating, the sun was starting to set. Annie quickly grabbed her notebook and recorded her last observation of the day.

Annie continued to wake up early each morning and observe the Sun for 7 days, recording everything in her notebook. The next week, Annie called her best friend, Olivia, who moved to California a few months ago.

After catching up, Annie told Olivia all about the investigation that she was doing. Annie explained that she was starting to notice a pattern in the motion of the Sun- it always rose in the East and set in the West, with it's highest point in the middle of the day. Annie was about to record her last piece of data on the sunset, and asked Olivia if she would want to do the same from California.
