This book is dedicated to the citizens of Los Angeles and to sustainable living.

One hot summer day Wayne and his best friend Samantha were playing inside with their favorite toys when Wayne had an idea.

"Hey Sam, why don't we go to the community pool and go for a swim on this beautiful day?" Wayne said enthusiastically.

"That sounds like a great idea! I'll go get changed and meet you there," Sam responded excitedly.

"Oh my goodness! Where's the water?" Wayne gasped.

"It's all gone! Wait, what's that notice say?" Sam inquired.

POOL CLOSED DUE TO WATER SHORTAGE
-----------PLEASE CONSERVE YOUR WATER----------
-The Homeowner Association

"Oh no, there's a water shortage. What are we gonna do?" Samantha panicked.

"We have to do something. I know, let's ask my mom, she'll know what to do." Wayne said.

"Mom, Sam and I need some help. The community pool is completely dry, all because of a water shortage in the community. What can we do to help?" Wayne cried.

"Oh my, that's terrible, Wayne. Luckily, you're talking to an expert on water conservation." Mrs. Miller cheerfully replied.

"Great, where do we start?" Wayne responded.

"It starts with us, Wayne, at the individual level. We each have to do our part to consume responsibly ." Mrs. Miller shared.

"Follow me, I'll show you where you can start." Mrs. Miller beckoned.

"In the kitchen, one way I like to reuse water is by taking whatever grey water is leftover from boiling pastas or vegetables and using it to water my garden," Mrs. Miller told the children.

"What's grey water, mom?" Wayne curiously asked.

"Well, grey water is relatively clean waste water that comes from our bath tubs, sinks, washing machines and kitchen appliances. I like to use our grey water on my garden." Mrs. Miller explained. "Wow, cool!" Wayne responded.

"In the bathroom, there are many ways we can save water. One way you can save water every single day is by turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth. This can save around 200 gallons of water a month, how awesome is that?" Mrs. Miller smiled.

"Wow, that's amazing. We can get the pool back in no time if we all just do our part to save water!" Wayne exclaimed.

"You bet, Wayne, and I haven't even told you the best tip yet: When it's yellow, let it mellow." Mrs. Miller and the children laughed.

"You can also save water by remembering to turn off the faucet until you need to rinse your hands. Each minute the water is running, it uses 2.5 gallons of water." Mrs. Miller shared.
