To Mark Twain School. If you didn't read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, this book can contain a lot of spoilers.

This is Bruno
This is Shmuel

The character I chose for this Character Analysis, is Shmuel. Shmuel is nine years old and is just like Bruno, except on the other side of the fence. They both have the same birthdays as well. This book is about the Halocaust and how two boys from different sides meet and become friends.
A little background knowledge
When Bruno found Shumuel in the beginning of the book, Bruno was also on the other side of the fence and he wasn't wearing any striped pajamas. I think Shumuel felt delighted since he found a boy that he could talk to. In the book, it doesn't show what his expressions were exactly, but I could tell that he was happy. One of the reasons why was because he was having a conversation with Bruno. If he didn't like Bruno, he could have easily left or could have said, "Go away!"
Shmuel's perspective of the beginning of the story.
I think this because, in the book it said, "Hello, " said Bruno.
"Hello," said the boy..." "..."I've been exploring," he said.
"Have you?" said the little boy.
"Yes. For almost two hours now." This conversation proves that Shumuel enjoyed Bruno's company. If Shumuel did not like Bruno being by him, he could have just said for him to leave or he could have just moved himself.

One character trait of Shumuel is strongly brave. By this I mean Shmeul is strong with a hint of bravery. I think Shmuel is this because, whenever Bruno goes to Shmuel to talk to him, Shmuel is never crying. It is true that he might not know exactly whats going on. But still, Shumuel lost his house, his cloths, his shoes, and basically everything he owns. I think this because, in the book it said, "I had a beautiful watch that he gave me but I don't have it any more. It had a golden face and I wound it up every night before I went to sleep and it always told the right time.'
'What happened to it?' asked Bruno.
'They took it from me,' said Shmuel.
'Who?'
Character trait of Shmuel
'The soldiers, of course,' said Shmuel as if this was the most obvious thing in the world.' 'And then one day things started to change,' he continued. 'I came home from school and my mother was making armbands for us from a special cloth and drawing a star on each one.'" From this conversation, I learned how the soldiers had took his watch and still, Bruno did not even shed a tear while telling this story. If I were in his position, I would not be as brave and strong as him.
Another reason why I think Shumuel is brave, is because, when Shumuel got a black eye one day when Bruno went to see him, Shumuel did not panic or anything. He still talked to Bruno, however, he did not want to talk about the black eye. It did say that Bruno thought that there were bullies at Shmuels side of the fence. In the book, it did not say whether or not Shumuel was scared about it. In the movie, Shmuel just shook his head and looked at Bruno. However, he wasn't crying and he stayed brave. This is why I think Shmuel is a strong character. He doesn't cry himself to sleep and doesn't show that he is as afraid.
I think this because, in the text it said "One afternoon Shmuel had a black eye, and when Bruno asked him about it he just shook his head and said that he didn't want to talk about it. Bruno assumed that there were bullies all over the world, not just in schools in Berlin, and that one of them had done this to Shmuel. He felt an urge to help his friend but he couldn't think of anything he could do to make it better, and he could tell that Shmuel wanted to pretend it had never happened." This proves my point because, even though Shmuel did not want to talk about his black eye, it never said that Shmuel was scared for it to happen.
I think Shumel is a dynamic character because, when Bruno first found Shmuel, Shmuel was dreary. I think he was dreary because, Shmuel had lost everything, including his cloths. I know this because, in the book it said, " I had a beautiful watch that he gave me but I don't have it any more. It had a golden face and I wound it up every night before I went to sleep and it always told the right time.' 'What happened to it?' asked Bruno. 'They took it from me,' said Shmuel. 'Who?' 'The soldiers, of course,' said Shmuel as if this was the most obvious thing in the world." This proves that the soldiers took this watch that Shmuel loved.
