A is for America
In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in The Bahamas thinking he had found a way to Asia. In 1607, Jamestown became the first place the English lived in. After that, the United States grew in population. The United States then became its own country.

B is for Bacon's Rebellion

In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon and Virginia settlers against William Berkeley. This was the first rebellion in the colonies. The Virginians attacked the Native Americans but, they were unsuccessful in taking them out of Virginia.
C is for Colonists

The colonists were people who came to America. The colonists spread throughout the land on the East. The colonies were made up of the BNew England, the middle, and the southern colonies.
D is for Détente
This word was used to describe a time period between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries could benefit from more trade and less nuclear warfare. This was between President Nixon and Brezhnev.

E is for Espionage Act
Espionage act did not allow certain forms of speech. It was meant to stop military operations. The Supreme Court ruled that Schenck v. United States did not violate freedom of speech.

F is for Franklin Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt was our 32nd president. He served from 1933 to 1945. The New Deal was meant to restore prosperity in the United States.

G is for Great Depression
The Great Depression began in October 1929 and ended in 1939. During this time, millions of people were unemployed. Businesses were not doing well and they had to fire more and more people.

H is for Hull House
Jane Addams was a social reformer and the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Hull house was one of the first settlement houses. It mainly provided help for immigrants and children.

I is for Immigrants.
The "Old Immigrants" were mainly German and Irish. The "New Immigrants" came from Asia and Eastern Europe. Nativism is a word used to describe people who did not like immigrants.



J is for Jackson
Andrew Jackson was our 7th U.S. president. He was president from 1829-1837. He served in both houses of Congress ad was a general in the Army.

K is for Kennedy

John F. Kennedy was our 35th president. Kennedy supported the Civil Rights movement and the Peace Corps. He was murdered November 22, 1963.
L is for Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase was made in 1803. It was bought for $15 million dollars. This doubled the size of the United States. This land was bought from the French.
M is for Manifest Destiny

The idea that the United States should have as much land as they can. Many people wanted to move to the West and the South. In the South, we took Texas. In the West, We took California, Kansas, and Nebraska.
N is for Native Americans

Native Americans were the first people in America. When people from other countries came, they had trouble with the Native Americans. As time passed, they were forced to move West. Many Native Americans died from diseases.
O is for Open Door Policy
A policy by the United States that allowed trade in China for all countries. It opened up China to businesses that wanted to invest. Allowing all countries to trade equally stopped

P is for Progressives
Most progressives were living in cities. Important progressives were Ida Tarbel, Jane Addams, and Jacob Riis. They focused on immigrants and evil doing of corporations.
