APHG end of the year assignment

Population Distribution:
Population distribution is the pattern of where people live.
Where people live affect many other
things in the community! Where children live (like you) can affect where schools are built.
Where people choose to live depend on many things like food, water, if the weather is nice, or if they want to be near their family.

Geographic Perspectives: Interpreting Dependency Numbers:
A dependency ratio is the amount of people who don't work/have jobs, divided by the people who do work.
Using these ratios can help us see what it's like in another country!
Take for example the United States and Nigeria.
In the U.S. each person was able to support themselves with their own money. In Nigeria, they had to support them self and someone else!

Think as a Geographer- One Place Many Densities:
Population density is how many people are in one place.
Geographers (people who studies the earth and the people living on it) use population density to make decisions on where to build houses.

Population Growth and Decline:
The number of people living on Earth has been growing since the inventions of medicine, better farming, and etc.
Some people are worried that there may be too many people on Earth, and we might run out of food!
No worries though, Garrett Hardin once said, "A finite world can support only a finite population; therefore, population growth must eventually equal zero." Meaning, the amount of people will stop growing.

Geographic Perspectives- Ideas of Thomas Malthus:
Thomas Malthus was a man who lived in 1798 when he published a book named "An essay on the Principles of Population." In this, he wrote that we will eventually run out of food because of how fast our population will grow.
Even though he was right about how fast our population grew, he didn't know we would have refrigerators!

Think as a Geographer Predicting Population Change:
If you study patterns and trends enough; then you can predict the future!
Predicting where people will live in the future can help with building roads and schools.
Go ahead, give it a try!
