There once was a porcupine named Fred. Fred was a very sweetand friendly porcupine, but he didn't have any friends. All of the
animals in the forest were scared of his big, sharp spikes.
2

Most days, Fred played by himself, while all of the other animals played together in the distance. They never asked Fred to play with
them.

It's no fun to play alone!3

One day, Fred saw an animal that he didn't recognize. It was a big, scary looking black bear. Fred was about to walk away, when
he realized that he didn't have friends because all of the other
animals judged Fred because of his spikes. He decided he was going
to call the bear over and see what it was doing in the forest.
Hey! Over here!4

Hi, I'm Rita! Thanks forbeing so friendly. I'm new
here and have no friends. They both started talking and Fred found out that the bear's
name was Rita. She had just moved with her family from
another forest and had left all of her friends behind. She was very
excited that Fred had introduced himself.

After getting to know each other, Rita asked Fred if he could introduceher to all of his friends. Fred was embarrassed to tell Rita that he had
no friends to introduce her to. He told her that all of the animals were
scared of his big long spikes. "They think I'm going to hurt them
when all I want to do is play with them!" cried Fred.
I have no friendsbecause everyone
in the forest is
scared of me.

"There's no need to be sad Fred, I know exactly how you feel" saidRita. She began to tell Fred that in the forest she used to live in,
all of the animals were scared of her too. She was bigger than the
rest of them and had very sharp teeth and none of the animals in her forest
would play with her either.
Don't worry Fred! I know how to help.

"Thanks for trying to make me feel better, Rita, but that doesn't help me very much. Did you ever end up making friends with the animals in your
forest?" said Fred.
"Why yes I did, Fred. And I know you can too! You just have to figure out
a way to show them that you're not scary and that you won't hurt them!"
said Rita.
I have an idea!8

Fred proceeded to tell Rita that even though his spikes looked verysharp, his mother dulled them down every night to make sure he
didn't hurt anyone.
"I know! I can bounce my ball on top of my spikes and show the other
animals that it doesn't pop. Then they'll know that I can't hurt them!"
Great idea Fred. Way to go!9

The next day, Fred and Rita saw the other animals playing anddecided this would be the perfect time to show them that Fred
wasn't as scary as they thought.
C'mon Fred, you can do it!10
