Amy lived in Henrietta. This town is full of parks, schools, neighborhoods and businesses! There are many different areas of the town, full of many activities. She loved to volunteer, ride her bike on the canal, go shopping at the mall and walk in the different parks.
What do you like about your town?
Amy's house was in a small neighborhood. Amy lived with her mom and dad and 3 older siblings. All of her neighbors were very friendly, and Amy always felt safe in her home.
Amy always felt safe in her neighborhood. She had many friends, including her best friend, Erika! Erika lived in the house right next door and they both loved to explore together.
Amy and Erika explored by playing in the creek near by, exploring the woods behind their houses, and by biking through the neighborhood. What fun activities did you do outside your home?
The safe and friendly neighborhood environment allowed Amy to explore and encouraged independence. This feeling of safety empowered Amy and allowed her to explore curiosity.
Although Amy had a caring neighborhood, she still had family boundaries she had to follow.
Did you have any rules growing up?
Amy had a few rules in order to keep her safe!
1. No staying out past dark unless Mom and Dad knew where you were.
2. No going anywhere outside the neighborhood alone!
3. Always tell an adult where you are going
Amy knew many of her neighbors which helped create the feeling of safety. Each summer her neighborhood had a picnic and celebrated with food and games!! Amy loved this event each year.
These fun events, as well as smiling faces, helped Amy experience a caring neighborhood. Amy knew she could trust her neighbors!
Amy loved playing in her neighborhood, however she loved to explore outside of her neighborhood. Henrietta had many parks she loved to visit at including the town park, Mendon Ponds park, and Tinker Nature Park.
Each park had their own cool parts!
The town park had a huge playground!
Mendon Ponds had beautiful views and Amy loved to feed the chickadees in her hand.
Tinker Nature Park had a trail with a scavenger hunt.
Amy loved to explore, which she was able to do in her neighborhood and her town!
She also loved to help others and be involved in the community. She wanted to join girl scouts but she was afraid.
How should she respond to this emotion? Do you think she should try something new?
Amy was brave and stepped out of her comfort zone. She decided to join a girl scout troop!
And guess what...
She loved it!!!
Her troop did a lot to help the community she lived in. Each week she would have a troop meeting to plan events.
Amy build many close friendships with the girls in her troop. She learned how to be a caring person and friend. She met many friends that she normally didn't talk to in school.
Even though she made many new friends, Amy didn't always agree with everyone in the troop. Amy wanted to volunteer at the food cupboard, while her friends wanted to go to the nursing home.
Should Amy tell her friends that her idea is better or should she try to compromise??
Amy wanted to yell and tell them to do what she wanted. Instead, she was able to talk with the others and tell them why she was upset. They together decided that they could do both activities!
Amy has learned how to interact with others in a friendly and caring way. This is called interpersonal competence.
