The Beauty of Hawaii and Kai
Anneliese Henshaw

When Kai came home from school, mother yelled, "Time to go, Kai! You have a flight to catch!"
But when mother rolled by Kai with the big, blue suitcase, Kai did not follow. "I do not want to go," sulked Kai.

"Don't be silly, Kai," said mother. "Grandfather is expecting you. You've been so excited for your trip back to Hawaii all year. Come on, you will miss your flight."
Silent, Kai reluctantly climbed into the car. Mother and Kai headed for the airport.

AIRPORT ---->
Once she had said goodbye to mother and was aboard her plane, Kai crumbled in her seat. Tears began to fall down her cheek. Eventually, her eyes became very heavy. Kai fell asleep.

As the plane landed, Kai awoke from her long nap. She looked out the window. Grandfather was waiting for her with a smile.
When it was time, Kai stepped off of the plane with her big, blue suitcase. Grandfather gave Kai a warm hug. "Welcome, Kai. I'm sure you are glad to be back in Hawaii."

That night at dinner, Grandfather noticed that Kai was very quiet. "Is everything okay, Kai?" he asked. "You are typically very talkative."
Kai simply shook her head and said she was fine. "Okay," he said. "Make sure you get some sleep tonight. We are going to go hiking tomorrow, and you will need your energy."

The next morning, Kai and Grandfather left for Volcanoes National Park to go hiking. This had always been Kai's favorite place.
Grandfather noticed that Kai did not seem to be enjoying herself. "Kai," he said. "Will you please tell me what is wrong? You are usually so happy."

Tears began to roll down Kai's cheek. "Grandfather, all of the kids at school make fun of me. They say my name is weird and that I have a boy's name. I wish my name was different. Why did Mother name me Kai?"
"Oh, Kai," said Grandfather. "Do you not know why Mother gave you your beautiful name?" Kai shook her head "no."
