PREFACE
For my children’s book, I decided on writing a fable, due to this genre allowing children to learn a lesson while enjoying a bright and colorful story. This story fits the genre of a fable by providing contents typically found in fables such as talking characters and having a character learn a lesson, or commonly known as the moral of the story. Those typical conventions I chose to follow due to wanting to create a book for children that is enjoyable to them, but they are also able to understand the lesson that is being taught throughout the text.
My intentions for this story are to teach children to understand that stealing is something that is not only lawfully wrong, but also morally wrong. My goal for this story is to allow a younger audience to understand that even though this story is fiction, and that animals personified are not real, the matter at hand is real and that taking things from others without permission is never the answer. I feel that I conveyed these ideas through creating two characters clearly and stating the underlying issue early in the story. As a preschool teacher, this is a lesson I would teach to my young students. They were in mind while creating this book.
The two characters in this story are the Raven and the Frog. The Raven likes stealing jewelry and shiny items from other animals in the woods simply to feel more powerful. He is sneaky and cunning, working to befriend the Frog in order to take the ring he desires from him. The Frog, although not as prominent in this story as the Raven, is subtly symbolized as wise and mature. The lesson that I wanted the Raven to learn was the exact moral of this story: “All that glitters is not gold.” This meaning that his lesson to learn was that stealing from others is never the right choice, and that an item does not have to be worth lots of money to have value to an individual. The Frog’s role was to teach Raven that lesson.
All the images that are in the story were provided from other sources, all of which will be included at the bottom. For the images, my goal was to stick to cartoon photos as well as bright colors, as I feel that attracts children’s attention easier. I tried to keep all the images as similar as possible, so the images flowed more cohesively. Although the layout of the photos may not be perfect, the cartoon style and the bright colors of the photos on the pages bring the story to life.

There once was a Raven who lived deep in the woods. The Raven loved flying high into the sky, sailing through the air and watching the other animals play.

The Raven loved collecting shiny, valuable items that he found in the forest. He would grab anything that caught his eye, even if the item didn’t belong to him.
One sunny day, the Raven came across a pond. In the pond sat an old Frog who was resting on his favorite lily pad. Resting right next to the Frog was a ring, shining beautifully in the sun’s glow.

The Raven’s eyes grew wide. The ring was so beautiful! With how bright and shiny it was, it must be very valuable. He knew he needed that ring, no matter what it took.
