Have you ever had a monster under your bed?
One that would just never leave you alone?
One that was so scary that you could barely sleep a wink?
Well, there once was a boy who figured out how to get rid of his scary monster. Would you like to know how?

Lennon’s monster was the scariest monster ever.
He had sharp teeth, spooky eyes, and stinky breath.
The big scary monster was the biggest bully
he had ever met.
He thought to himself that maybe he should try
to scare the monster away, maybe that would
make him leave. He stomped his feet, waved
his hands, and yelled GO AWAY MONSTER!
But it didn’t work!

He tried for days and days to get his big scary monster to go away, but he just wasn’t scary enough. So, he decided to ask for help. Mom always has good ideas he thought, I’ll ask her!

Lennon went to his mom and asked her what to do about his bully. “Well,” She said, “Some times people just don’t know how to be kind because no one taught them how. It can be pretty hard to make friends when you don’t know how to treat people with kindness.”

Lennon was very confused. (How does someone not know how to be kind? How did I learn? Who taught me how to show kindness?) He was going to have to think about this.

Rules for the classroom:
1: Treat others with kindness
2: Don't litter
3: Be good listeners
The next day in class, Lennon noticed the poster Ms. Richardson put on the wall. It gave him an idea.

Rules for my room!
1) treat people with kindness
2) no scaring
As soon as Lennon got home, he rushed up to his room and got started on his very own poster. He taped it nice and big up on his door, so the monster would see it.

Rules for my room!
1) treat people with kindness
2) no scaring
Even with Lennon’s beautiful poster up, the big scary monster continued to be scary. He then remembered that there weren’t any monster classes at school, so how could the monster read the sign if he didn’t know how to read! But he knew that even before he learned how to read, people still taught him how to be kind, so he would try something new!
