This story is dedicated to children who feel as though they do not have a voice.

Ramona is a Kindergartener who has just moved here from Columbia. She is on her way to school. Every day she rides the bus and looks out the windows at the trees.
When she gets to school, she hangs her bag up and goes to her desk. All of the other children gather around and talk, but she doesn't not. Ramona does not understand what they are saying. Ramona speaks Spanish, and the other children speak English.

Sometimes Ramona tries to join in, but the other kids look at her funny and she can tell they are talking about her in a mean way. This makes Ramona feel sad.

Soon, the teacher starts class. The teacher also speaks English, and a small amount of Spanish. She asks everyone to share something about their weekend, but never calls on Ramona. This makes Ramona feel ignored.
What did you do this weekend?
At recess time, the children play soccer. Ramona asks the children if she can play in Spanish. The children look at her confused, and soon go back to playing. Ramona goes and sits alone. This makes Ramona feel excluded.

While Ramona sits alone, she draws a picture. This picture shows her playing a game of soccer. She then is approached by the teacher. The teacher looks at the drawing and smiles. She stands up and walks Ramona over to the other children.

She tells the class to gather around. Ramona feels nervous because everyone is looking at her. She then shows the children Ramonas drawing. One student says, "Oh, she wants to play soccer with us!" He then gestures for Ramona to join in the game. Ramona smiles and runs over to play. This makes her feel included.

When the students go back inside, the teacher gestures for Ramona to come over to her desk. She then hands Ramona a chalk board and a piece of chalk. She then says the phrase "Draw to Talk" to her in Spanish. The teacher has now given Ramona a voice. This makes Ramona feel valued.
