Jonathan had begged his parents nonstop for months and months to get him a dog. They told him he was not quite ready for that responsibility, so for a while he remained quiet about his begging for a long time. After all, there was no reason to keep nagging at what was essentially a brick wall. He always knew in the back of his head though that they'd eventually change their minds.
So he waited and waited for months and months to no avail. The waited seemed to be an eternity to Jonathan, but it's just something out of his control. What he didn't know, however, was that once Christmas came around, there'd be no more waiting.
Jonathan jumped right out of bed, excited to not have to wait anymore for his presents. He ran to the fireplace and saw a large pink box, with a red bow tied in a knot on top. He was eager to see its contents. He ripped off the bow, leaving quite a messy scene. But when he opened the box, he couldn't believe what he had seen! It was the puppy he had been waiting for for months and months. That was the greatest morning of his life. He was no longer in mourning over not having a friend.
That puppy was a good thing for Jonathan. He was much happier, and always made sure to spend plenty of time with his new friend. Things were going quite well. He always did the right thing for his puppy, and began to write stories about all their adventures together. The effect on Jonathan was outstandingly positive. He was so much happier, it even affected his grades, bringing them up a ton.
Jonathan got older, as did his friend. He passed high school, and moved on to college. This deeply saddened Jonathan as well as his now full grown best friend. Four years went by without him seeing his dog (whom he named Ranger, by the way). He always thought of their past adventures, and could not wait until he graduated and got to reunite with his best friend.
As soon as he got out of school and got a job, Jonathan and ranger moved in together into a small apartment in the middle of town. Ranger was getting older now, as he was about ten years old. They never slowed down on having adventures, though.
A few more years went by, and it was always the same. The two were inseparable, always doing everything possible together. Walks, runs, hiking, swimming, everything like that. This pair gave a new meaning to a dog is a man's best friend.
Ranger began to show his age, however. When he was 15, quite old for a dog, he got extremely sick. Jonathan took him to the vet, and found out that his best friend in the whole world had cancer.
