Edward Tulane is a rabbit almost entirely made out of china. His ears and tail are made out of real rabbit fur, and everything else is glass. His owner is a young girl named, Abilene Tulane. She would always dress herself and Edward up everyday. Edward had an unique wardrobe with handmade silk suits, a lot of hats fit just for him and a small gold pocket watch. Abilene always wound up the pocket watch so he would know exactly when she came home from school.

Abilene always set Edward up looking out of the window in the dining table so he could see when she comes home. When Abilene left, there neighbors dog, Rosie came in uninvited. He lifted up his leg and sprayed the white table cloth with pee. He spotted Edward and greeted him by shaking him back and forth vigorously. "Drop it!" said Abilene's mom. She took Edward to get repaired for Abilene.

A couple weeks later the Tulane family were setting off to London on the Queen Mary. "Goodbye,"Abilene said on the top of her lungs to her grandmother. "Goodbye, lady," she called back. Edward felt something damp on his ear. Finally, all the people on land disappeared, and so has Pellegrina. Edward is finally relieved that her presence is finally gone.
Edward drew a lot of attention as expected. Several little girls gazed at Edward deeply, but there were 2 patricular brothers, Amos and Martin that stood out among everyone else who asked and stared at Edward. At the second day at sea Martin came up to Abilene. "What does he do," asked Martin. "Does he wind up?"asked Amos. "No, he doesn't wind up,"said Abilene. "Does his clothes come off?"asked Martin. "Of course they do. He has many different outfits and even his own pajamas,"said Abilene. As usual, Edward isn't paying attention to their conversation, but thinking how dashing he might be looking.
Next thinking Edward knew he was snatched off the deck chair and first his scarf, and then his jacket and pants were ripped off of him. He heard the pocket watch hit the deck floor, and watched it roll toward Abilene. "Look at him, he's even got underwear." said Martin. "Take it off," Amos shouted. "NO!!!" screamed Abilene. Martin removed Edward's underwear. Edward was paying attention now. He was petrified. He was completely naked except for the hat that is still on his head.
"Give him to me ," screamed Abilene. "He's mine." Amos and Martin started to toss Edward around. Edward thought that being naked in front off a shipload of strangers was the worst thing that has happened to him, but he was wrong. Being thrown around while naked from one grubby boy to another was on the top of his list. Amos caught Edward, but when he was about to throw it back Abilene tackled him down burying her head into Amos's stomach. But Edward didn't go flying back to Martin, instead Edward Tulane went into the arms of the deep blue ocean.
"Edward!" screamed Abilene. She held out the pocket watch so he could see. My pocket watch. I need that. Edward thought. He hit the water so hard that his hat flew away. He began to sink and watched the the water turn green to blue and back to green until it was pitch black. Edward finally landed on the ocean floor face down, and experienced true emotion for the first time. Edward was afraid.
Almost a year in the ocean, a storm came and Edward went up and down begging to not go back down to the ocean floor but down he went anyway. Unexpectedly he was picked up by a net and then a fisherman. "Ain't no fish," said an old man. "Looks like a rabbit toy," said the younger one. "I'll take it home to Nellie. Let her fix it up, and give it to some kid," said the old man. As they made it back to shore Edward felt the sun on his face and the wind blowing through the little pieces of fur that he still has. And a wonderful feeling filled his chest, he was glad to be alive.

The old man gave Nellie Edward."What should I call her," asked Nellie. "Susanna?" said the old man. "Just right, but first we need to put some clothes on."said Nellie. She dressed Edward up in a pink dress with ruffles on it, and every night she would sing edward a lullaby. One day a women named Lolly came through the door. She was loud and obnoxious. She picked Edward up and threw him on the couch. The next morning Lolly got Edward and looked him straight in the eye, and told him that this people are treating him like a rabbit child. She took Edward and threw him in the trash and took the garbage out. That was the last time he saw Nellie.

Edward spent 118 days covered in garbage when something unexpected happened, he was picked up by a dark and shaggy dog. The dog gave Edward to a man named Bull. They were always on the move. Traveling in empty railcars and by foot. Bull made some clothes for Edward and slept. A man entered the railcar that they were sleeping in."I'm sick of you guys always sleeping everywhere. This ain't no motel," said the man. Lucy started to bark. The man kicked Lucy, Edward wished he could do something to protect her but he couldn't. "And what's this?" and he pointed the flashlight to Edward.

"That's Malone,"said Bull. He poked at Edward with the toes of his boot. "Things are out of control,"said the man. The train started to move. He looked down at Edward."No free rides for rabbits,"said the man. He flung open the railcar door and kicked Edward out in one go. He went flying out and started to roll down a hill as he can hear the sound of the train getting more and more quiet. He stared up at the stars and wondered how many times will he have to leave without getting a chance to say goodbye.
He was found again once more but by a woman. She nailed his velvet ears to a wooden pole and made him a scarecrow. Birds flew around his head. And a little boy approached Edward and took him down the pole. He started to walk toward a little house. "We are bringing you to Sarah Ruth,"the boy said. "I'm bringing you to Sarah Ruth, my sister, she's sick I'm bringing you to her because he ruined her doll that she loved every much," said the boy. "He was drunk and stepped on her dolls' faces and it shattered it 100 pieces. I tried to glue it back together but I couldn't." said the boy.
