On July 6th, 1907 in Mexico City, Mexico, a beautiful baby girl was born with the name Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón. She decided to go by Frida Kahlo.

Frida grew up in her blue house with her family of five. Her father's name was Willhelm and her mothers name was Matilde. Her two older sisters were Matilde and Adriana, her younger sister was called Cristina .

Frida had some difficult times in her young life, at 6 years old she had Polio and was very sick for 9 months. At 18 years old she was was in a bus crash, she needed surgeries to fix the damage done to her body.
While in her bed recovering from her surgeries, Frida decided to paint and draw to pass the time. With lots of practice, Frida became a great artist.
Frida painted pictures of animals, nature, and she often painted herself. She liked to express her culture and the colorful world around her.
Like any good artist, Frida didn't always paint the pretty things in the world. When Frida felt upset, she painted bad things too. It made her feel better.

Sometimes kids at school would pick on her for the hair between her eyebrows or other silly things like that. It made Frida feel alone and upset.
Frida decided that she would not let those bullies hurt her feelings. She was smiley, she was smart, and she felt beautiful just the way she was! This confidence made her heart proud and strong.

As Frida grew up, she decided to wear clothing that made her happy and it wasn't what always what everyone else wore.
Some people would say that Frida's style was outside of the box, but Frida would say that there is no box! Still, Many people made fun of her for her clothing or her unibrow.
To Frida, her unibrow was what made her special.
Frida could have easily plucked, waxed, or shaved the hair on her face to be like the other women around her, but that is exactly it, Frida was NOT like everybody else. She just went with the flow of her mind.
Frida once said “I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.” She painted herself so often because she enjoyed her unique differences.
Soon, many other people would love these differences too.
In 1922, Frida met the famous artist Diego Rivera when he was painting a mural at her school.
Little did Ms.Kahlo know, she would fall in love and marry him in 1929.
Although Frida and Diego were often apart spending their time alone, when they were together, they were unstoppable.
This art was done by Diego Rivera, he painted with a similar style to Frida. They both saw the pain in the world, but they recognized the beauty too.
