Why do parents always make you go to bed so early? 

They wrangle you into pajamas, stare you down as 

you brush your teeth, and then hypnotize you with 

songs and stories until your eyes flutter shut against 

your will. They never let you stay up and have any fun! 

Well, I have always wondered what my parents did 

when I went to sleep.   I think I know the real reason 

why my parents want me to go to bed early. When I 

go to sleep…

My parents turn into superheroes! They put on 

their eye masks and capes with big initials 

stitched on the back. They have to put on their 

disguises so they can be incognito as they go 

off to fight crime. I bet they take care of all the 

mean strangers they tell me not to talk to. 

They probably think I'm too little to help. 

Exactly like how I'm too little to stay up and so 

I have to go to bed. Or maybe...

They are spy astronauts, here on Earth for a 

secret mission. Maybe that is why they never 

seem to understand why I just need that super 

awesome new toy with the wheels and the 

batteries and the remote control. They are 

from another planet! They probably have a 

secret communication screen that pops out 

and they can talk to their alien friends. Then 

again...

My parents might have a time machine that 

they think is too dangerous for me to play 

with. They jump in it every night and go back 

in time to see the dinosaurs! They ride on the 

backs of the Triceratops and Pterodactyls and 

have to keep away from the Tyrannosaurus 

Rex.   My parents are so old they probably even 

have some friends that were around back then. 

Or maybe...

They are secret royalty. They want me to have 

a normal childhood until I am old enough to 

become king! They probably have to go do 

their king and queen royal duties once I am in 

bed so that their subjects do not get out of 

hand. I bet they tell their people what to do 

almost as much as they tell me! I wonder 

where they hide their crowns and royal 

jewels...
