Poetic Devices

Alliteration - When the beginning or first, initial sounds of words are repeated - 

Assonance - When the same vowel sounds are repeated within the same line (or two) 

Consonance - When the same consonant sounds is repeated anywhere within the same line (or two) 

Imagery - also known as sensory detail or sensory language. Poems rely heavily on descriptions of, (appeals to our senses of) sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. 

Personification - giving human qualities to something non-human. 

Anthropomorphism - often confused with personification - giving animal-like qualities to something not an animal

Symbolism - Using an object or color to represent an idea. 

Onomatopoeia - When a word sounds like the intended noise. 

Oxymoron - Contradictory words or even ideas (opposites)  that are used together.

Internal Rhyme - When a word in the middle of a line rhymes with a word at the end of the line.

Slant Rhyme - When words almost, but not quite, rhyme 

Haiku 

Amusement parks                      Basketball

They bring me joy                                                  It is my passion

Six Flags and Knotts Berry Farm                         Been playing since I was nine

It's never boring                                                    Maintains physical health

                                                School

                                                  It is not the best

                                                                            I'm finally graduating

                                                                             Almost out of here

Ode- My Girlfriend

An ode to my girlfriend

Thank you for loving me

You are my light

You make my life complete

You are like a puzzle piece that fits perfectly

We have been together for two years

My heart yearns for that to last a lifetime

You are generous

You are amazing

You are Beautiful.
