March 16, 1945
It was just me and Antonio on the camp. We have been roaming around the field for what seemed like an hour. We were desperate to find something to eat, after the horrible potato soup the soldiers gave us a few days ago.
Although we didn't have any money to trade with others who were awake though, we still tried to find some food.
But as we were walking, we heard soldiers stomping on the grass, coming to find anyone trying to escape. We didn't immediately know that though. Once I looked back, I noticed 5 soldiers coming up to the tents. We knew what was going to happen if we stayed here.
"Quick! We need to run back to the tents!" I whispered to Karl.
"I know! We need to go now!" Karl says to me.
We both run as fast as we can, across the camp to get to our tent and sleep.
"Phew! That was a clo—" Karl said.
"What was that?" a soldier yelled.
"Oh great, go to sleep now!" I said to him.
It was a tiring day, and we were exhausted. I noticed that Karl already went to sleep, and so I tried to, but for some reason, I couldn't.
I heard soldiers coming up to my tent, and pretended to sleep by closing my eyes and pretending to not feel or hear anything going on.
They soon went away in a matter of minutes, looking like they were thinking that nobody was awake and trying to escape the camp.
We were inches close from being caught, and that scared us the most when doing things like this in the middle of the night. No wonder why these soldiers are so scary to us Jews.
March 17, 1945
Its a new day, but living in the camps is just getting worse for me and Karl. All of us Jews had to work endlessly and earn little to no money. That's what I saw at least. I noticed many Jews getting beaten up today, and we didn't know why.
It was also a sunny day, which made it even worse. We were running out of water and food, as well as other stuff. This made me think that we should escape soon, but it would be difficult to.
While we were all working, Karl goes up to me and says, "Why do we have to stay here and not with Mama or Papa?"
I didn't know the answer, and that was because we were to young. But what I did know is that staying here is dangerous, and we have to escape somehow. But for some reason, I wasn't thinking much about it then.
So after hours of endless work, it was time to eat supper. The food finally tasted good, and weren't that hungry afterwards. All of the people ate, an it was time to sleep. The tents were set up, and we went to one of them.
We went inside the tent, but didn't fall asleep yet. Together, we were whispering about our plans to escape the camp. After a long time of planning, we got some sort of plan that we thought will work. Who knows if it will?
After all that planning, they heard soldiers come once more. They immediately went to sleep since they were exhausted, even more than yesterday.
March 18, 1945
Its a new day, and nothing new has yet happened. We always do the same thing everyday; work.
"It seems like we always do work," I said.
"Yeah, that is true," Karl said.
The rest of the day, we were just working and working and working. It was eventually supper time, but as we were going to get our food, I heard a conversation the Nazis nearby. As i walked closer, I started to hear even more. For almost 10 minutes, I eavesdropped on their conversation, and found out that they would add electrocution wires because they will go away for a few days.
But that didn't stop me and Karl from escaping, because our plan didn't have to do anything with the wires. We just need to wait for the perfect time to.
After we ate supper, it became midnight, and the soldiers left. It was finally the perfect time for us to escape.
"Karl, get up! We are escaping now!" I said to Karl.
"Ok ok! I getting up. Lets go!" Karl said.
We both ran into the fields and get a shovel. We dug a hole under the fence, and once it became deep enough, we put the leftover dirt in the hole so it seems like we didn't escape. We then ran into the forest, desperate to find anyone that can
help us. We ran and ran, passing all the night animals and thick trees. We were so deep in the forest, but we still didn't get to the other side or find anyone.
After all of that, we settled down, and slept on the grass, desperate to wait for the next day and continue our search for help.
March 19, 1945
Me and Karl were just running in the forest. It has been about a few hours and we were starving to death because of the fact that nobody was there to give us anything to survive in the forest. We were desperately trying to find anyone that can help us, but there was nothing in our sight. All there was in front of us was a ton of trees and animals all around us.
“Hello? Is anyone here?” I yelled as loud as I can.
We got no response, so we kept on walking thrugh the forest.
We thought nobody was here to help us and we would just
suffer here, but we soon were wrong.
After a few minutes of walking and talking about where we should go, we came across a small wooden cabin. We see also see some people. As we get closer, we see even more people
and more cabins. We went in the area sneakily to explore, and we found out this was an entire unknown town in the forest!
“Hey there! What are you two boys doing here?” One man came up to us and asked.
“We escaped the camp yesterday night and ran here a few minutes ago,” Karl said.
“Oh. Do you want to come into my cabin and eat something, you
seem cold and hungry,” the person says to us.
“Yes! Definitely!” I said to him.
He guides us to his small cabin and tells us to sit next to a small fireplace. He then goes outside, maybe to cook some food.
“Hey, do you think that we should trust this person?” Karl asks me skeptically.
“Yes I guess? Why?” I say.
“Just asking. How about the rest of these people?” Karl asks.
“We don’t know anything about this small village, but the guy seems nice,” I say to Karl.
We stay in the cabin for a few hours, looking out the windows and talking about why the village is in the middle of the forest.
But soon, it becomes nighttime. The person that lived in the camp told us to sleep on the small mattress, while he sleeps in a different room. We go to the mattress, and go to sleep soon.
March 20, 1945
It was a new day, and it felt relaxing to be outside of the camp, but we knew the dangers of soldiers sending us back to the camps and hurting us is still here. We had to be cautious since today was also the day for some reason, soldiers try to find people that escaped and helped people escape, but during the daytime. We had to go out of our cabins at a certain time and run to a different nearby forest.
But it was still a good day at least.
We ate breakfast, but right after that, I told the person living in the cabin something.
“So you know we escaped the camp, and that was because it was getting too dangerous for us to stay there, but we also want to find our parents. I remember that my parents were taken away by the soldiers, and maybe brought to a concentration camp. But can you please help us find our parents?" Karl said.
"Well, I guess yes, but it might take some time to help. In the meantime, lets discuss how we will be able to find your parents," the person said.
We sat on the chair, talking about where we should go to find our parents and that kind of stuff.
After discussing, it soon became time to eat lunch, so we went outside and went to a cabin where they give food. We took the food, went back to the cabin, and started eating. The food actually tasted really good; better than how we expected.
Since we had nothing else to do, me and Karl were just running around in the grass, playing tag and other games. We became very tired afterwards, and went inside the cabin again.
It became suppertime an hour later, and we went to the cabin that gave us food, and ate the food they gave us. We then went to our beds, and slept very quickly.
Overall, it was a normal day before we were sent to the concentration camps.
March 21, 1945
Today was finally the day. Me and Karl would finally be able to find our parents, with the help of a Resistance Fighter. But this wasn’t all happening now. We were planning to start our plan by midnight, which is when nobody is awake and many of the guards leave.
For now, it would just be a normal day, but we got to do some new things. We got to work for some of the people since we had no money with us. We also were able to fianally explore the rest of the forest, which was an amazing sight compared to the part of the forest which we ran through a few days earlier to run from the camp.
After all of that, we managed to get some money out of working for the Resistance fighters in teh small village. We also made a journal about what we saw in the forest, which was prettty cool. And don’t forget, the mealss that we got tasted super good.
But now was the time. It strikes midnight, and we ran wherever teh resistance fighter went.
“I think there is a concentration camp in this direction.” Hurry up and follow me,” the person said as he ran.
