Once upon a time, in the Birmingham Zoo, there lived a hippopotamus named Doofy.Doofy was beautiful,
as far as hippopotamuses
go. He had a smooth grey
color. His skin was rough,
just perfect for a
hippopotamus. Doofy
was a very portly animal, as all the best hippopotamuses should be.

Doofy was beautiful, as far as hippopotamuses go. He had a smooth gray color. His skin was rough,
just perfect for a hippopotamus. Doofy was a very
portly animal, as all the best hippopotamuses should be.
3
Doofy was a humble hippo. Doofy did not see himself as the most beautiful hippopotamus at the zoo (even though he
was). However, Doofy was not a very happy hippo either.
Doofy saw himself very plain indeed, not eye appealing at all.

4
“There are so many fascinating animals in the zoo; I want to be someone remarkable too,” Doofy cried.

5
One day Doofy decided to take a walk around the zoo. Doofy strolled around, and the first animals he met were
the birds.

6

The birds were extraordinary. Their feathers were so colorful! They were beautiful, but they were much
too small. “They are petite. I don’t want to be a
small bird,” Doofy said.
7
Next Doofy squeezed through the snake house.
8

Doofy was intrigued by these long, skinny creatures. They moved by
sliding along, but Doofy didn’t think
he would like to be a snake either.
“The snakes are fascinating, but I like
having legs,” Doofy decided.
9
Doofy walked along until he got to the savannah where he saw the lions.

10
The lions were gorgeous felines. They had toned, strong muscles, but they looked ferocious. Doofy did not want
to look so dangerous. “Lions are king of the jungle, but
that’s not for me,” Doofy whispered so that the lions
couldn’t hear.

11
The zebras were the next animals that Doofy spotted.
12

They were very unique animals with black and white stripes. The
zebras looked very content, but
something about their look simply
was not the right look for Doofy.
“Stripes wouldn’t be a good look
for such a plump animal as me,”
Doofy noted.
13
Then Doofy saw them. They were the most amazing, most beautiful animals that Doofy had ever seen. They
had long necks that reached as tall as the trees. Their
marvelous body was tan with fascinating brown spots.
