War. I wasn't ready for it. My old pal Charles stood next to me frightened. As we stare at the terror, we get startled when a group appears behind us. We started running into the woods for some time until the enemies caught up to Charles. Charles, struggling to get free, then gets crushed with the mace. I ran away with fear that I'll be the next one.
Hours and hours of struggling to survive in the woods, finding no allies but enemies. Until I met a camp. I caught up with them and they told me that they were getting supplies. I took one of the people with me and asked for his suit so I can go back to my hometown. He refused. In fear that I would get in trouble with him, I impaled my sword through his chest and took what he wore and joined the group to go back to get supplies. While on the ride, I had a flashback from around a month ago.
A month ago, when the disease in my hometown hit, pope Innocent declared me as a part of an army for god. At first, I was very excited. Until I understood what it meant. I had to serve in a war. I didn’t get any details about it other than that my best friend Charles was going there too. For the past few weeks, I then went to parties, and drank beer knowing that there was an exponentially high chance that I would never come back from the war. I despised the pope because out of everyone, I was chosen last. Last meant they would never expect me to come back. And the pope knew it. The last thing he said to me was “May the lord be with you” in the most nonchalant tone. He was greedy and only wanted money. He probably never even cared about Christianity. And from then on, I swore an oath to my friends that if I ever came back from the battle, I would be sure to kill him. In the most
brutal way possible. For him to feel it all.
When my group arrived back to my hometown, I mourned for Charles as we went to go get supplies. But I knew I had to escape, so I hid by a bush as the clumsy knights walked past me. One of the officer would check the bushes just in case an enemy spy came here. When he was going to check the tiny cubby hole I was behind, I quickly threw a pebble at a knight's head which caused a commotion. The officer then turned around and scolded the knights. That was my time to escape. I ran away into the field as a bunch of soldiers chased after me. I then found a sharp corner and turned and ran away. I took off my armor and pretended to be a regular peasant and walked away from the soldiers as if nothing happened.
A while later, I met a serf and she introduced herself as Aalis.
She noticed that I was a knight because of my linen tunic underneath the peasants clothing. and also hated the pope. She disliked the pope because he added tax for the peasants. And then I thought about it. We were being treated as pawns to them. So we set up a plan. A plan to kill the pope. It was a good plan. I supposed. Taking a pouch full of sand with me, I snuck into the lady’s and pope’s house and drew a layout plan of the whole house while everybody was sleeping. We got through by Aalis distracting the knights so I could sneak into the house. And it went on from there. I peeked in the lord's room to see and hear the lord snoring loudly with his underwear. I chuckled as I went along the halls and found the pope sleeping.
I didn’t want to kill him right then and there because it would cause too much noise and commotion and I would get caught and probably die. I slipped the bag of sand inside a compartment in the table. I checked the other rooms and saw a study room. Years ago, I learned numbers and how to read because I was lucky to have parents who could pay for it. So I picked up a paper and read it. I couldn't read most of the words but by reading a bit, I could quite understand a bit of the writing. I picked up the word “knight” and the name “Edmund.” I didn't understand it.
The next day, we went to the lady’s house waiting for the time to strike.
We climbed in the kitchen window as I picked up a kitchen knife. While tip-toeing, Aalis almost tripped and I told her to be careful. We then hid behind the pillars to see the pope talking with the lady. I whispered to her that if all goes wrong, plan B was to poison him. The lady said that she and the lord would be leaving later today to attend a ceremony for the night. After some time, they went upstairs and the serf started to take out her ax. I picked the kitchen knife out of my pocket. As the lady left, I knocked her out which I didn't need to do. We then rushed into The pope's room where the serf tried as hard as she could to hit him with an ax. She missed by a mile and almost chopped my head off.
I then opened the compartment of a desk and picked up some sand. I threw it at his face and I licked the sauce off the kitchen knife. I then stabbed him with it as he stepped back.
“You” he stuttered. “You’re that guy who-”
Too late. I shoved him as he fell through the window as I heard a thump on the moist soil down below. For the first few seconds of my life, I felt so accomplished. I felt like I won the ax throwing tournament that I would never win. I was chosen to do this. “I won”, I chuckled, staring at the “lifeless corpse” of the pope. I laughed with happiness and so did she. We just defenestrated him. And it felt good.
Then we heard the door creak where 2 knights stood. I pushed them away as I made my escape. One of the knights ran towards me as I ran along the halls for dear life, waking up everyone in the building. While running across the place to get to the exit, I stumbled across some wine and some beer and as myself, I took some. And then I left, completely forgetting about Aalis. Until the last second. Right when I left. With regret, I stumbled my way back to my house, holding some wine and beer with me.
