Aa is for Aquatic
Bottlenose dolphins are aquatic animals that live
both offshore and inshore just like other dolphins.

Bb is for Blowhole
Dolphins breath through a blowhole located on the top
of their head. They sleep by resting one half of their
brain at a time so they can breath.

Cc is for Calves
Calves are nursed for 3 to 6 years of their lives. At
birth, they weigh 22 to 44 pounds, and are 100 to 135
centimeters long.

Dd is for Dorsal Fin
Dolphins have a dorsal fin on the center of their
backs that help them maintain balance as they
swim, and spread out body heat.

Ee is for Echolocation
Dolphins find objects using echolocation (ek-oh-
low-KAY-shun) by making clicking sounds to
produce an echo. Each click lasts nearly 50 to 129
microseconds.

Ff is for Flukes
Dolphins have two tails attached together known as
flukes. Flukes have no bones or muscles, and helps
dolphins paddle forward through water.

Gg is for Gray
The gray skin color on a dolphins back can be used to
hide from their predators or prey using the dark
depths of the ocean, and their white underside using
the oceans bright surfaces.

Hh is for Hearing
A dolphins hearing is better than a human, and unlike
humans, sound is mostly received through its lower
jaw.

Ii is for Intelligent
Dolphins are said to be very intelligent, and have
a bigger brain than humans.

Jj is for Jumping
Bottlenose dolphins can jump as high as 16 feet
into the air from the surface of the water. They can
be seen jumping during play or leaping for food.

A bottlenose dolphin knows itself and other
dolphins by using a signature whistle. Each
dolphin has its own whistle.

Adult bottlenose dolphins are around 6.6 to 13 feet
long.

The melon is the rounded area on a dolphins
forehead. It contains fat and helps in echolocation.

made up of five-finger like digits that are slightly
curved.

Most dolphins can swim as quick as 3 to 7 miles
per hour, but some can swim as much as 18 to 22
miles per hour.

Dolphins have a short rostrum (beak) containing 18
