In Unit 3 we thought about solutions and innovations that can help all people be food-secure as cities grow and change.

Agriculture is the art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock. It includes the preparation of plant and animal products for people to use and their distribution to markets. Agriculture provides most of the world's food and fabrics.

Among Florida's top agricultural products are oranges, greenhouse and nursery products, cane for sugar, and cattle and calves. Florida's recognized signature crop is citrus. The 2017 Census of Agriculture shows 502,886 acres in orchards known as groves in Florida.

Florida's food security issues are reduced access to healthy food options and cycle of food excess and deprivation.

Many food-insecure families live in food deserts, which are defined by the USDA as limited access to inexpensive healthy foods as a result of living far from a supermarket or large grocery store and having limited means of transportation. As a result, families often only have access to small convenience stores when shopping for food. These stores have limited affordable fresh produce and other healthy options available. Instead, they offer less expensive but often unhealthy food options, such as chips, sodas, and other shelf-stable, high-calorie foods.
