To be good at a sport you need to understand it, perform it, work hard at it, and practice. Overall, the most important thing is to have fun! This book will hopefully help teach you the fundamentals, rules, and basic information about field hockey. Maybe this will spark interest for you as a younger reader to start this sport.

Introduction
In outdoor field hockey, the positioning is 11 against 11, and for younger field hockey players the game is played 5 players against 5 other players. The emphasis of this book is for younger field hockey players, so it will be explained for players under 14 years old.
In the 5V5 games, a team normally has 2 forwards, 1 midfielder, and 2 defenders. The players should look like the 5 face on a dice. At this age, you dont have a goalie yet, so you dont need to worry about that.

Positions
The forwards work up the field aiming to score goals. The midfielders are a mix of forward and defense, so they are positioned most of the time in the middle of the field. Defenders are the last round of players before the goal, so their job is to not let the ball get past them. They prevent the opposing team from having too much time to score.

There are a LOT of rules in field hockey. The whistle of the referee will blow almost every minute. On the next page it shows the main fouls and rules needed to know for younger players.

Rules
1. NO FEET
2. Only one side of the stick can be used (flat side)
3. You need to stay 5 yards away from the opponent on a free hit
4. No coming in contact with the opponent
5. NO reaching from behind the opponent to get the ball (make sure you get feet around to top of the ball)
6. Shoot the ball from inside the circle to score a goal
7. If it goes out of bounds, take the ball where it came out and do a restart

Passing is one of the most important skills in field hockey. You simply just take the ball and hit it with the flat part of your stick. It is a way of getting the ball from one person to another up and down the field hockey field.
Passing
When you are ready to pass the ball, follow these steps in this order: First, you should receive the ball, then view the field. After that, look down at the ball (make sure you have control). Next, look up again (making sure the player you are passing to is open). Finally, hit the ball to pass to the next player.
