Easter, also called Pascha in Aramaic, Greek
and Latin or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival andcultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following
his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
A custom in the Apuseni Mountains is to guard the wooden plank in romanian called „toaca”. At Denii (On Holy Thursday, people go to a religious service, in romanian are called „Denii”, that remind us the 12 moments that commemorate the betrayal, capture, judgment, death of Jesus) the sting „toaca” is put on, Thursday evening. The bells have not been rung since Friday. The toaca is a very interesting element, in the popular traditions, it protects the world, the man, from the devil.
„Toaca”, the wooden plank, is beaten all night, until the Resurrection.
On Saturday night to Sunday, people go to church to receive the light of Christ and they are saying the traditional "Christ is risen!", "He is risen indeed!"
The Liturgy of the Resurrection is lived with great joy. Bright clothes, songs in cheerful tones, candles in hands and candles lit in souls, smiles on their faces. In the middle of the night, everything are blazing with light and joy!
An important moment during the Liturgy is when you receive the Holy Eucharisty. People receive and take at home „Paștile”, the Holly bread and Holy wine that symbolize the body and the blood of Jesus.
The red eggs are clash in the Easter time and the romanians are saying: „Hristos a Înviat!” „Christ is risen!" and they answer „Adevărat a Înviat!”, „He is risen indeed!"
What do Romanians eat at Easter?
The symbol of Easter is the lamb. Romanians prepare lamb dishes: steak of lamb.
