Hi! My name is Amelia!
It's so nice to meet you! What's your name?
I want to tell you a story!
A story that actually happened to me!
First, let me tell you a little about me! I love
playing in the rain, collecting bugs, and baking cookies!
I'm adopted and I also have two moms!
Some kids in my school think it's funny to pick on me for having two moms.
They ask me all the time where my dad is and I tell them that I don't have one, which normally gets a laugh.
There are days when it's easy to ignore them and walk away.
But some days, it's hard. Like Monday, when they announced there is going to be a "Daddy Daughter Dance" held at school on Friday.

Looks like you can't go to the dance Amelia! You don't have a dad!
Class let's quiet down, please!
Ha Ha Ha!
Ha Ha Ha!
Ha Ha Ha!
Ha Ha Ha!
I thought it was wrong that I couldn't go to the dance just because I didn't have a dad.
So later that day I went home and talked to my moms to see what they had to say.

We talked for a while about what we could do and finally, we decided to go to the Principle to see what he had to say.
The next day my moms drove me to school and together we walked to the Principle's office.

Hello Ms. Green and Ms. Moore what can I do for you today?
Good morning, Mr. Johnson. We wanted to talk to you about the dance that is happening on Friday.

Oh yes, the "Daddy Daughter Dance"! What about it?
Well considering that there are a lot of students in school that don't have a father. We were thinking of changing the name!
Change the name? But we have had this dance for years and it's never been a problem!

We understand that and we would never take that away from those fathers. However, we were suggesting changing the name so that every child can participate in the dance!
I see, and what name would you suggest we change it to?
The "Someone Special Dance"!
My moms explained that with the new name change, every student is welcome to the dance!
They can bring anyone who is special to them, whether it's their mom, sister, brother, cousin, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, or dad!
Everyone can come to the dance and have fun without being left out!
On Wednesday everyone at school was talking about the name change.
I was expecting everyone to be upset with the name change but everyone seemed to like it!

I'm going to bring my mom!
I'm going to bring my Aunt! She takes care of me!
