As Jesus talked to the people at 

the mountainside He seemed to 

be saying, "I know a better 

way for you to live.   And if 

you will let God help you live 

My way—God's way—you 

will be so much happier."

God's way, of course, is the 

way of LOVE.

Jesus tried to make it clear 

to those who came to listen 

to Him at the mountainside.

Jesus said, "You know 

the command, Do not 

murder.   I'm telling you 

that anyone who is 

angry with another 

person is guilty of 

murder."

The people at the 

mountainside wondered....

What does this 

mean?

Here was a new idea. It was not 

only wrong to kill but wrong even 

to be angry.

Jesus said just calling someone else 

a bad name makes God sad.   And 

why?   Because that is not the way 

of LOVE.

Love is kind, 

gentle, polite, 

and forgiving.

It is not normal to 

always say nice things, 

but people can say nice 

things when God is in 

their hearts.

Still on the mountainside, Jesus 

said, "Don't say anything you don't 

mean. You only make things worse 

when you pretend, saying 'I'll pray 

for you,' and never do it, or saying, 

'God be with you,' and not meaning 

it." 

Jesus went on to say, "You 

don't make your words true 

by using religious talk. Just 

say 'yes' and 'no.' When you 

use your words to get your 

own way, you go wrong."

Just when the people at the 

mountainside thought Jesus 

was done, He brought another 

new idea.

This idea startled the people...

Jesus said, "When someone is 

mean to you, do not be mean 

to them.   If someone tries to 

get you in trouble, do not try 

to get them in trouble.   In fact, 

help them get out of trouble."

This was hard for the people to 

take.   The people on the 

mountainside were thinking, "If I 

could just get a hold of so-and-

so, I'd treat him as he treated 

me!"

Jesus helped the people realize 

that God's better way was the way 

of forgiveness, love, and helping...

This is important especially when 

we don't think others deserve 

forgiveness, love, and help.
