Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic ocean, was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Growing up, Amelia's parents, Amy and Edwin, described her as adventurous and curious. Her father was a railroad lawyer and her mother had a rich family. Amelia also had a younger sister named Grace Muriel.
When Amelia's grandparents sadly passed away, her mother, Amy, had received an inheritance. This allowed her mother to pay for Amelia's education while attending a private school in Pennsylvania. However in 1917 on a Christmas visit to see her sister in Canada, Amelia witnessed many hurt soldiers due to World War one.

It made her realize that she wants to care for these soldiers so in 1918, she left school and moved to Canada to become a nurse aid. She was kind and caring that she even continued to work during the flu pandemic. Though she got very sick herself while in Canada, it is said that her passion for flying began there.

In the area she lived, there were many planes training for the World War. Amelia and Grace Muriel became friends with some of the officers in training and would often go watch them practice. This is when she truly knew she had interest in flying herself.

After World War one, Amelia briefly moved to New York City to attend a medical program but she left the school to move back in with her parents in California. That is when she went on her first ever airplane ride in 1920. This resulted in her buying her first ever plane in 1921!

Soon later, she earned her pilot license. A little later, Amelia would move to Massachusetts where she became a social worker while still pursuing her passion of flying. It was a goal for a woman to fly across the Atlantic ocean, so in 1928, Amelia was selected to
