Span 101

Once upon a time a long, long time ago, a group of people saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus. The god was telling them this was their new home. These people would become known as the Aztec's. They would build the city of Tenochtitlan.

The city of Tenochtitlan was symmetrically beautiful. Flowers scattered throughout the city. The city was a place of trade; objects such as gold, cotton, tobacco, and weapons were traded among the people. The city was filled with temples, schools, and places of sacrifice. There was even two zoos in the city. The amazing sculptures of the gods lined the city.
Up to 14 years old of age it was up to the parents to educate the children. Mothers would teach their daughters to always support their husbands. Young sons were taught to be hardworking. At the age of 15, the boys were sent to school to learn the way of trade, history, and military fighting. However, the girls didn't learn how to even read or write.

The people of the Aztec loved the ball game of tlachtli. The game was played in two special buildings throughout the city. They would play this game with a rubber ball and use their hips to hit it into a ring.

The Aztecs believed if you became intoxicated before the age of 60 the penalty was death!

Religion was the most important thing to the Aztecs. The two main gods worshipped was the rain god (Tlaloc) and the war and sun god (Huitzilopochtli). These two gods had a temple in the middle of the city!
All gods were honored with dancing, music, festivals, burning on incense, decoration of statues, and even human and animal sacrifice.

The Aztec Calendar was a 260 day calendar that was divided into 20 weeks. The movement of the planets and stars were observed and determined when religious ceremonies and agricultural practices would take place. The sun was very, very important to the Aztecs.
