
Thrown off the train (1893)
Gandhi was riding a train in first class going to Africa. The workers on the train ordered him to go back to the regular section because of his skin color. Gandhi refused, so then he gets thrown off the train.

Burning the passes (1908)
The Indian congress party of South Africa held a meeting trying to get people to join. The purpose of the meeting is to spread to people that they should be treated equally. All people of color had to have a pass.
To provoke the British Gandhi started burning their passes. This was an act against the law, therefore, Gandhi got beaten and arrested





State of India living in an ashram, poverty in India (1915-1918)
In India there was a lot of poverty at this time. In the trains there were so many people riding that people sat on top of the train. When Gandhi returned he dressed appropriately to Indian culture and practiced his religion. While Gandhi was in a meeting place with other speakers. Gandhi spoke to the people that talking will not make a change to the British and they need to start acting.

Day of Fasting and Prayer, Amritsar Massacre (1919)
A large crowd had gathered in Amritsar to speak about independence. The British had then shown up there. The army was ordered to shoot all the innocent citizens. They aimed for the middle of the crowd. In this event there was 1,516 casualties. The Indians did not fight back but only ran away.

Protestors, Police killed, Gandhi's Fast (1921)
Gandhi led a protest of burning their clothes from Britain. The clothes represents control. In this protest Gandhi was setting an example for peaceful protests. Later The Indians had started a riot through out the streets. They had killed some police men.

This is not what Gandhi promoted or wanted. He thought that if he would start to fast and eventually die, then they would stop the violence.
March to the Sea, Salt Tax, Raid on Dharasana Salt Works (1930)
Gandhi led a march to the sea to provoke and to get a response from the British. The British knew that the Indians wanted a response so they did nothing and let them make salt, which was illegal. Indians would start selling salt. After some time the British started arresting people.

The salt work was part of the protest. British led Indian police men showed up and beat them the peaceful demonstrators very viciously.
