1983, South Africa: Thrown Off the Train
Gandhi was travelling to South Africa as an attorney. The conductor questioned him for being in first class and an attorney as an Indian. The conductor told him to go to third class, but Gandhi refused, so he was thrown off the train.

1908, South Africa: Burning the Passes
Gandhi thought it was unfair that only Indians needed passes for identification. He made a speech about this to other Indians. Someone started a fire and threw his pass in, and he was arrested. Gandhi threw in many other people's passes while being beaten by a British officer.

State of India/Living in Ashram/Poverty in India 1915-1918
India was a poor country with many poor villages with British landowners renting the land to Indians. They would grow indigo to sell to pay rent, but the British sold their indigo cheaper than the Indians, so they couldn't earn money. Gandhi lived in Ashram and lived like a regular Indian, he only wore the clothes he made.

1919, Day of Fasting and Prayer / General Strike / Amritsar Massacre
The General Strike was that all Indians would stop working and would pray and fast to protest against the British. The British shot at peaceful protesters without warning, and killed 1,516 people with 1,650 bullets being shot; That was known as the Amritsar Massacre.

1921, Protesters / Police killed / Gandhi's Fast
Lots of violent protests broke out, including police being killed. Because of this, Gandhi fasted until all of the violence stopped.
