September 3 was a very important day for James Adler. James was turning 5 years old. He was very excited because his whole family was going to be celebrating with him at his party.
As it came closer to his birthday his parents and his family would ask,
¨What do you want for your birthday?¨

¨What do you want for your birthday, James?¨
James would eagerly respond the same every year. ¨I want to go to school and make friends.¨
James´ family never knew how to respond because they could not put him in school because of his age.

¨I want to go to school!¨

All James ever talked about was going to school. In the morning at breakfast he talked about school, in the afternoon while playing outside he talked about going to school, at dinner he went on and on. In everything James did, going to school was always on his mind.

¨I can´t wait until recess at school.¨

Every night when James went to bed his parents would discuss what they were going to get James for his birthday. They knew he would be going to kindergarten in just a couple of days but did not know how to surprise James with the big news.

¨What are we supposed to get him to open on his birthday?¨
The next morning James´ mother suggested, "We should get him school supplies and a backpack for his birthday.¨ His father avidly agreed.
After agreeing they got dressed and headed to the store for party supplies and James´ birthday gift.

¨We should get him school supplies and a backpack for his birthday.¨
When his parents arrived at the store they headed straight to the school supply section and searched for the perfect materials for James.
Then they set off for the party decoration aisle.

When they arrived home, they put James to bed for the night and decided they would get a head start on the decoration for his birthday party the very next day.
After a couple of hours of decorating and preparing everything for the party, they were headed to bed.

Bright and early on September 3, James´ parents went into his room and woke him up by shouting ¨Happy Birthday, James. You're finally 5!¨
Then James got up, got dressed, and ran to the dining room to see his decorations.

¨Happy Birthday, James. You're finally 5!¨
After breakfast, his family arrived and they began to celebrate. They all played games, ate cake, and finally, they opened presents. When he opened the present from his parents and saw that it was school supplies he was very excited.
That night before bed James was informed that he would be going to school in just 2 days. He was more than ecstatic.

It was a few days later and the day James has been waiting for. It was his very first day of school. All morning he was rambling on and on about how much fun he was going to have and all of the new friends he was going to make. When James was dropped off at school, he gave his parents a hug and ran into the building.

When James entered the building he was greeted by his teacher and shown where to sit.
The teacher gave him a seat at a table with two other boys. James introduced himself to Jake and Tyler. James thought that these two boys would be his best friends and that they would hang out all the time.

Throughout the day James would try to start conversation with Tyler and Jake but they would ignore him.
During recess, James tried to play with the boys but they laughed at him and ran away. They teased him and said, ¨We don't want to play with you. Your shirt looks stupid and your backpack is cheap.¨

¨We don't want to play with you. Your shirt looks stupid and your backpack is cheap.¨
James was very quiet and upset the rest of the day. At pick-up, his parents were confused to see that James was not happy with how his first day went.
When they arrived home his parents sat him on the couch and his father asked ¨What happened at school that made you so upset?¨
