Once upon a time, long ago, in a dark, ancient forest,
lived a squat, sour man with the odd name,
Rumpelstiltskin. One might ponder why he was so sour and
bitter. This was because his wife was incapable of having a
baby, and oh—how they longed for a child. One day,
Rumpelstiltskin was in town and heard a poor man boasting
that his daughter could spin straw into gold.
How silly, thought Rumpelstiltskin. No one but him in
all the land of Germany possessed such powers.
Rumpelstiltskin listened until he heard the foolish man
make a deal. The king would place the girl in the palace
dungeon with a mountain of straw. If she could spin the
straw into gold within one day, she would be crowned
queen. However, if she did not, she was sentenced to death.
Excited, Rumpelstiltskin hurried home to tell his wife of their
good fortune. Rumpelstiltskin had a plan.
