When I started this class, I thought that learning about technology would be a struggle. There's a lot to technology, including the different tools and how to work them. I didn't know about most of the tools that I worked with. I thought that I would not be able to fully understand how to work all the tools.
Getting through this semester, I know a lot more now that I did before I started this class. I feel more confident, and I learned knew things about tools that I'm used to using, for instance, Google Docs. I also learned about new tools that I plan on using in my future teachings. Since, I will be using these tools in the future, I learned how I can access them easily.
I used to think that tools like Google Docs and Google Slides were just tools underneath Google, I didn't know that they fell under a name, which is Google Suites. For Google Docs, I used to think that I only could indent by pressing enter or tab. I used to think that Google Slides was just a tool you could use to make a presentation and change the theme. I didn't know how to use it more than just changing the theme, background, and a few other things.
I now know for Google Docs that I can go underneath the format tab, scroll down and click on align & indent, click on indentation options, and click on a number and it'll move the words over. I learned as a future teacher this tool can be useful because I can easily edit and correct students’ work and leave comments. I can use this in the classroom for when students want to do collaborative work. Students can all share the same document and input their ideas.
I now know how to add animations and use transition in Google Slides. I can use this in a classroom to present information to my students. Also, this is a free tool which is important considering that teachers aren’t always given the best resources. I also learned that teachers can keep track of who is actively participating on the assignment by looking at the Google Slides history.
I've heard about adding things to my bookmarks, but I always thought that you had to click on the star to add that website under your bookmarks. Then, you would've had a lot of websites listed and not organized. I would try to remember the website or just remember the things that I needed off of it, leave the website open for a couple days until I didn't need it anymore, or just take screenshot of what I needed. Since, I didn't how to add websites to another website and organize them because it was my first time, I thought using Diigo would be difficult.
After, I've completed the Diigo assignment, I learned about a new tool that I can use to store websites that I need for class, or other situations. I think that this is a really helpful tool to have especially as a teacher because it'll help me become more organized, so I won't have to consistently search for things. I think all teachers should use this method because it will save them less of a hassle, and they can add anything to their bookmarks for their class. I also learned that teachers can also share their digital organization tool with their students which can be very helpful because it can be hard for students to find good resources. I've finally started to use my bookmark on my phone, and it's really been helpful because I have access to it right away, and don't have to try looking it up again.
I used to think students learning about cyberbullying was important and I still do. I also used to think that there should be more done in the school when students tell their teacher or principal that they are being bullied, and I still stand by that. I had moments in my life where I really didn't understand the importance of protecting myself on the internet, known as digital citizenship. When I was younger, I didn't know easily it was for people to get your information until I started learning more and more about it.
I learned that it's important for teachers to be informed about digital citizenship so that they can protect all their information because a teacher creates a lot of accounts, so they need to keep up with their information and keep it safe. Teachers should know about cyberbullying so that they know what to look for, how to address this situation if a student comes to them, and to educate students on why they shouldn't cyberbully. It's important to teach students about digital citizenship because they will be making a lot of accounts for school, and once they get out of school, they need to know to protect their information. Also, stepping away from password and usernames, students need to be careful just like teachers on what they post because once it's out there, it's out there for good. I think that it’s important for students to learn about cyberbullying because it starts at a age young age, and for them to learn what to do and what not to do, can make a huge impact on that kid and other lives that they stand up for.
I used to think that if I wanted to create a timeline, I would have to always do it through Google Docs or make a prestation through Google Slides. I didn't know there were apps like Canva that you could use that had different templates, and those templates being timelines. I've always thought that if I used another tool outside of Google Suites then I would have to pay. I wasn't shown all the free tools that I could use to help me complete my work.
Now, I can be creative with my timelines. There were different templates, different images inside of Canva, and etc. I can use this tool for future teachings. This tool can be used to show the books that the class has read from the beginning of the school year to the end. I will also add a description that the class gives about the book. Another assignment that I can use with this tool is, having the students do a timeline on their favorite toy.
I didn't know about different tools that I could use to create a story; for instance, Storyjumper. I used to think that if I wanted to type up a story I created or do a twist to a story that's already out, I thought that I would either have to use Google Docs or Google Slides. I used Google Docs to type up stories before so that would've been my first choice. I also used to think that Google Docs was all I needed because I could add pictures, change the font, and etc.
Now, that I know about Storyjumper, my options don't have to be limit the next time that I do a story assignment. I can see myself finding usage for this in my future teachings, since I'll be working with preschoolers. For example, for an activity, my students can make books come to life. Students have a big imagination so I would assign an activity for them to complete as a whole class first, which they will do by adding on to each other's story. Then, later on, I will let them create their own individual story and take turns going through each student's story.
I used to think that making my own Kahoot! game would be difficult to make. I thought there were only a few things that you could do if you didn't pay for an upgrade. Also, I thought that it would be difficult to use for younger students. Lastly, I used to think that teachers would play on their phones if they wanted to test the game out first.
Kahoot! is a fun way to learn and study. I now know how to make my own Kahoot! games. It was easy to make a quiz and I was able to make it on my own. I can see myself using this tool for questioning my students about material or getting to know them at the beginning of the semester. Since I want to work with preschoolers, I will make sure that the questions for the getting to know you are common things that you would ask a child about their selves. I learned that there's a setting where teachers have the option to test the game out on their computer and there's a phone on the computer for them to answer the questions with. For teachers going through there Kahoot! games before class, this will be beneficial to them to see if their Kahoot! needs improvement or not.
I've only used Socrative once and I thought that it was a great tool. It lets you know if you missed a question and if you did, it'll give you the correct answer. Not only will it just give you the correct answer, but it'll explain why it's correct, and why the one you chose was incorrect. I used to think that the teachers/professors came up with all the questions and answers.
I learned how to make my own quiz through this tool. There were quizzes that were already created, and they had quizzes for different subjects. You could also change the grade level, the number of questions, change the question and answer, and add a picture. I can see myself using this tool for miniature quizzes and exit tickets. I would create a simple exit ticket question(s) to see if my students understood the material from that day.
