After finishing my coffee, I headed down to the barn. The grass crunched beneath my feet with every step. Inside, it was quiet except for the soft creak of the roof as it warmed in the sun. I walked over to the bench, grabbed the keys to the helicopter, and opened up the hangar doors. The chopper sat there waiting, cold but ready.
I climbed in, checked the gauges, and flicked a few switches. The rotor blades started to spin slowly at first, then faster and faster, thumping louder with each rotation. The wind kicked up dust around the skids. With one hand on the controls and the other adjusting the throttle, I gently lifted the helicopter into the air.
The lodge, the barn, and the rolling paddocks below began to shrink as I rose into the clear blue sky.
