Lifestyle and customs of tribal groups on the plains
Early on Natives had established communities in the United Sates. These communities were called tribal groups and there were many different tribes stretching from the Mississippi River all the way to Canada. Each tribal group had their own council of elders that, along with a chief, would make decisions for the tribe. Both men and women played significant roles. The women would handle things such as cooking and making tipis. Men would take care of the hunting. The Native Americans mainly hunted buffalo because they were able to use it in many different ways. They also used horses to help them travel faster.

Lifestyle of American settlers/American Cowboys and Vaqueros
The Vaqueros originated in Mexico and eventually settled in Texas. They were expert riders and managed cattle. When they moved to the United States they heavily influenced the American Cowboys. The Vaqueros taught the Cowboys things such as how to manage large herds. Although the Cowboy appearance was influenced by the Vaqueros they added their own touches: pointed toe boots, padded chaps, and bandannas. Not all American settlers were Cowboys. Many settlers worked to clear land, build homes and grow crops. They relied mainly on hunting, farming and trading.
