On the 99th day of school...
Okay class! One more activity before you pack for the weekend. As I call your name I need you to come up and pull a popsicle stick from the cup.
Each stick has a random number on it, and for a special surprise on monday each of you should chose a item or snack that you enjoy and want to share with the class, and then bring in that number of items

Hello class, Welcome in and please take your seats with your fun items! We will be getting started with our big surprise soon enough, but first as I call your name could you please come up and present you fun items to the class and write your number on the board ! For math class today we will be solving an addition problem!
That following Monday
Since we have been working on adding numbers 1-100. Today we will solve one of our largest addition problems yet. As you add your number to the board place an addition sign after it so the friend after you can continue our math problem. After every two numbers we have on the board we will add them together, and see our final answer at the end.

16+
Hi Ms. Smith! The number I drew was 16 and since my favorite snacks are lollipops, my mom bought 16 lollipops for today!

Okay first up today we will be having Adam! Adam could you please stand up and tell us your number and what you've brought in today?

Adam, that is so wonderful! That is an amazing snack to bring in for today's special surprise. Go ahead an take your seat, and could we please have Alex come up next to present!
16+

Hi guys, one of my favorite animals are frogs. So I went to the park on sunday and caught frogs for today. Ohh and my number was 12!

16+12=

16+12=28

Ohh my goodness! Alex, frogs are not what I meant by a fun item for today's big surprise! I suppose I should have been more clear with my instructions, but umm let's continue anyway...

Class our math problem is 16+12. Which may be confusing for some so let's break it down into smaller chunks. Pull out a piece of paper and let's solve this together. when we see 16 and 12 we know we can break that down into 10 and 6 and 10 and 2. 10+10=20 and 6+2=8 So together our answer is 28

28+7=
When we were picking numbers I chose number 7. Which is my favorite number too! So I decided to bring in 7 bags of chips. Those are my favorite snack too!
Bryce would you please come show the class what you have brought in for the very big surprise today.

28+7=35
Bryce that's wonderful! I like chips and the number 7 too! Go ahead and take the chips and a seat and let's prepare to solve 28+7
For this problem let's start by adding 8 and 7. When we do that we get the answer 15. So now all that's left over is our remaining 20. By adding 20 and 15 together we get the answer 35. So 28+7=35

So for today's surprise I picked the number 21 and my dad and I blew up and brought in 21 balloons!
35+21=

Gracie could you show the class your fun item you brought in today?

Gracie that is so lovely!, and balloons are perfect for today!
35+21=56
Here for this problem we have 35+21. This may look scary so let's break this down into 30+20 and 5+1. We know that 30+10 is 50 and 5+1 is 6 So when we combined them together we have 50+6 which equals 56!

56+1=
When picking sticks I drew the number 1, and I was so excited because my favorite thing in the world is my dog boxer. So brought him in for everyone to meet today!

Jessica would you please present what you brought in today?

56+1=57
Ohh my goodness! Jessica while I love dogs too and Boxer certainly is cute let's keep in mind that animals are best when left at home!
However, let's continue with today's addition problem anyway. Here we are taking the number 56 which could also be read as 5 tens and 6 ones. Let's focus on adding our 1 to our 6 ones, and by doing that we now have 7 ones. Lets add our 7 ones back onto our 5 tens where we now have the number 57 for our answer. So 56+1=57

57+9=

Kayla will you please join us up front next and show us what you've brought today?
When picking numbers I got 9, so today, I brought in 9 flowers!

57+9=66
Kayla flowers are beautiful! Thank you for bringing them in for today's special surprise!
So here we have the problem 57+9 so let's break that down into 7+9 to start. 7+9 we know is 16. So now we have the problem 50+16, and because 50+10 is 60 and 60+6 is 66. We now know that 57+9=66

66+7=
I really like chocolate chip cookies and because I picked the number 7, I brought in 7 giant cookies for everyone!

Landon would you be so kind as to go next?

66+7=73
Landon what a sweet surprise, thank you so much!
Alright class and here we have the problem 66+7. So let's break this problem up too where we now have 6+7. 6+7 we know is 13 so now we have the new problem of 60+13. 60+10 is 70 and then we add on our remaining 3 so we now have 70+3. 70+3=73 so we now know that 66+7 is 73 as well.

73+3=

One of mine and my older brothers favorite things to do is make mud pies, so we made some last night and brought them in for everyone to enjoy! Also my number was 3.

Maci will you please present next?

73+3=76

Maci this was very creative and certainly a surprise! I'm so happy to see all my students thinking outside of the box... Let's continue onto our new problem.
Here we have the problem 73+3. We know that 3+3=6 so if we take our 6 and add it onto our 70 we now have the problem 70+6 which gives us our answer of 76!
