Mom and Dad were in the kitchen making breakfast for the family like they did every morning

Today was pancakes and the smell filled the air waking the twins from their sleep.

The parents knew the twins were awake because they got up the same way they had for the past two weeks...

Well you took forever to pick out your outfit Amelia so it looks like were even!

Liam, you take forever to get ready! I shouldn't have to wait that long for the bathroom!

Well! You took my rocking horse and I want it back!

It's not just yours! It's mine too and I see that you took my scooter and I want that back!

That's not yours either!

SHARE ALL DAY!?

Mom and Dad both agreed that Liam and Amelia should not be arguing, because brothers and sisters should share and be kind to each other. They decided the best way to learn this lesson was to SHARE ALL DAY!

Yes, Mom and Dad decided that Liam and Amelia had to share all day, and anything they could not share would be taken away.

Liam and Amelia had agreed for the first time in two weeks; they did not want to miss out on any fun.

Liam and Amelia were very smart at figuring out how to share, since they were in 3rd grade and had been learning division at school.

Their teacher explained that division was just like sharing. It's where you split something into equal parts among different groups.

Liam and Amelia began with breakfast. Mom had made 12 pancakes for the family, and there were 4 people to share them among. So Liam and Amelia needed to learn how many pancakes each person would get.

To divide the 12 pancakes among the 4 people, Amelia and Liam used repeated subtraction. That's when they keep subtracting the number of people (the divisor) from the number of pancakes (the dividend). Then the number of times they subtracted the 4 people from the 12 pancakes told them how many pancakes each person could have.

Here, each person had 3 pancakes!

12 - 4 = 8

8 - 4 = 4

4 - 4 = 0

12 4 = 3

After breakfast, the twins' friend Matteo came over to watch their daily 60 minutes of television. At first, the three friends argued about which show to watch and how long each show should last. But then they remembered Mom and Dad’s rule about sharing. So they decided to share the 60 minutes equally among the 3 of them so everyone could watch their favorite show and keep their TV time.

Liam, Amelia, and Matteo used visual modeling to figure out their TV time. They drew 3 circles, because the circles showed the 3 of them (divisors). Then they drew 6 base-ten blocks because one block showed 10 minutes, and there were 60 minutes total (dividend). They put base-ten blocks in the circles, one at a time, equally between each circle, until the 6 base-ten blocks, their 60 minutes of TV time were gone. Finally, they saw that each person would get 2 base-ten blocks, or 2 x 10 minutes each, for a total of 20 minutes of TV each.

After watching TV, Liam, Amelia, and Matteo wanted to bake cupcakes to share with their neighbors. The cupcake recipe bakes 36 cupcakes total (dividend), and they had 6 neighbors(divisors) they wanted to share with. Once the cupcakes were ready, they needed to figure out how many cupcakes each neighbor would get.

The children used a ratio table to solve this division problem. They drew their table and listed the titles of “total cupcakes” and “how many each neighbor would get”. First, they saw that with 6 neighbors getting 1 cupcake each, they would only need 6 cupcakes total. They wanted to get as close to 36 total cupcakes as possible, so they started thinking about the 6’s math facts. They knew that 5 x 6 = 30, so with 6 neighbors and a total of 30 cupcakes each, they learned each neighbor could get 5 cupcakes. They knew that to get from 30 cupcakes to 36, they only had to add 6 more cupcakes, and from their ratio table, they saw that 6 cupcakes gave each neighbor 1 cupcake. So, using their ratio of 6 total cupcakes to 1 for each neighbor, and their ratio of 30 total cupcakes to 5 per each neighbor, they added the two ratios together. Finally, they saw that with 36 total cupcakes, each neighbor could have 6.

While the cupcakes were baking, the twins decided to meet with the rest of their friends and play in the park. The children had a pack of chalk with 56 pieces in the box. The 7 friends were arguing over who got which pieces, but then the twins remembered what their Mom and Dad said, so they worked to find a way to divide the chalk pieces evenly.

This time, to figure out how many pieces of chalk everyone could get, the twins and their friends used their multiplication facts. They knew they needed a total of 56 chalk pieces (dividend), and one of the multiples had to be 7 because there were 7 people (divisor). They thought back to the multiplication table they used in school and realized that 7 x 8 is 56. But because multiplication and division were inverse operations, 56 divided by 7 would have to be 8.
