The wind threw the snow in my face, trying to blind me. There was a snow storm and it
wasn’t helpful. I was following Jerry, a polar bear, so that I could get a good amount of food for
the days ahead. I am an artic fox named Tom. I would normally be hunting for food myself but all
the small animals I hunt blend in so well that it is like finding a vole in its tunnels. Because of this I
have to stay on the track of Jerry. Jerry doesn’t particularly like me mooching off his kills, so I have
to stay like a bazillion miles away. Well not a bazillion, but at least 20. Anyway, I was trying to
keep close to Jerry, but the storm picked me up and threw me into the ground. The winds were
too harsh. I had to dig a den into the ground and wait the storm out. As I started to dig, I got tapped
on the back.

I looked up and saw Bob, “You can come to my cave if you want Tom” He barked through the
snowstorm. Bob was a know-it-all Artic fox but I had no choice. So we trudged through the snow to his
cave. Once there he told me, “There be poachers out there, hunting polar bears. I saw one take Jerry.”
“What! I can’t find any food on my own in winter! When did you see this!?” I screamed.
“Saw it when the storm started. They took ‘em and drove him east, down the big mountain.”
“Well, I guess there is no point in being frustrated about it. You said that you had brought in some
voles. Eight if I remember correctly!” So we sat there and ate all eight voles and slept until the storm
was gone. When it was over I left without saying goodbye. Once I was back out in the snow I started
walking east. I kept walking until I had to stop. My feet hurt and there was a growing hunger in my belly.
I decided that faster I saved Jerry, the sooner I got food.

Grrrr, my belly growled of hunger. It was a tiger roaring. My legs shook like
an old glacier. Finally I collapsed on the ice. I had been walking for almost a
week. All I have eaten is snow. I had no strength left. Then I heard a buzz.
Louder, louder and louder still. The buzz was getting closer. In a rapid motion of
electric current in my brain I came to the conclusion that it was an avalanche. Boy
was I wrong! What I thought was an avalanche was the roar of the red poacher’s
truck! In the back I saw Jerry! I dove into a patch of short shrubs. The large
patch hid me well because they grow in groups so they don’t get carried away by
the wind.

The truck drove directly over the shrubs and stopped right in front of it. They
jumped out of the truck and walked towards the back of the truck. I jumped out of
the shrubs. I had a sudden burst of energy from the possibility of food. One of the
poachers shouted to the other, “Grab the fox, Ferdinand!” The poacher who shouted
was a 4 foot woman with red hair and was wearing jeans and a big puffy brown
jacket.
“Don’t we already got one Phillderd?” He was 6 feet tall and had brown hair and
was wearing black pants and a bright yellow jacket.
“No, that is a polar bear!” Phillderd exclaimed. I have another thing to add to the
description of Ferdinand. He is kinda slow. As I thought that, he dove for me. I
dove out of the way. He missed and hit his head on a rock. He was knocked out. “If
you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself” Phillderd muttered. She ran
at me and grabbed at me but missed. We ran around in circles doing that for ten
minutes.

Finally I jumped on the truck. Phillderd ran into the bumper and fell over. She was
too tired to get back up. I jumped onto the lock it broke off. I immediately jumped
into the shrub to hide.
Jerry got up out of the cage and roared. “NO!!!” Phillderd screamed like a big
bald banshee. She screamed, and you could hear it from miles away. Jerry walked
off to find food. I waited until he was far away and then started following him. Soon
I came along a large feast of caribou. I ate until I couldn’t eat any more and then
ate some more. It never felt so good to eat!
