Millie is getting ready for her first field trip of the year!

Today, her class is going to the White House to learn about the government. She's so excited, she can't sit down!

They arrived at the White House, and Mille could hardly believe her eyes.

When they made it, their teacher, Ms. Liberty, told them this is where Bills get passed.

Bills are plans for new laws!

What if the Bill is a bad idea?

Then the President can Veto the Bill! That means that he says "No!"

What if the President is a loser?

Well, we don't call people "losers." But if the people don't like the President, we have the power to Impeach them. That means they are fired.

They went inside and Millie found a piece of paper on the ground.

Miss. liberty what is this paper?

That's a copy of the bill of right from the U.S contusion. It is made up of the 10 first amendments.

what are those?
These are the right every citizen is given, just because they are a citizen. The first one says that you are aloud to say what ever you want, believe in any religion you like, as well as assembly which means gather with others.

The second one says that you are allowed to have guns if you feel the need. The third one says that if you do not wish for a soldier to stay at your home you have the right to refuse them. The fourth one says that you can refuse to let a police or other to search your home/property. Provided they do not have a warrant.

The fifth one says that you have the right refuse to answer questions that could convict you of a crime, which is also know as "pleading the fifth". It also says that you can not be convicted and tried for the same crime twice within a period of time.

Next time you ask me a question in class, I'm gonna plead the fifth!

The sixth amendment says that you are allowed to talk to a attorney if and when you desire during a trial, it also says that you are allowed to have a jury during a trial. The seventh tells the difference from common law and crimes that need to be seen before a jury.

The eighth amendment says that if someone goes to jail, the money they pay to get out cannot be too much. It also says people cannot be punished in a cruel or terrible way.

The ninth amendment says that there are some rights that are not stated in the bills of rights but still exist.

Finally, the tenth amendment say that any powers not clearly given to the federal government is given to the states.

If lawmakers make laws that go against these amendments, that makes them Unconstitutional!

WOW! That was so interesting!
Lets go learn more!

these drawing are based off of the first 3 amendments.

These graphic charts tell us what each branch of government does and who our representatives are.

Flip to the back of the book to see the charts in greater detail.

Why are there three different branches of government?

Because of Separation of Powers!
This means that one branch won't have
too much power or responsibility.

This also means that we have
Checks and Balances! That means
that each branch can rely on the
others to keep them in line.

who are those old guys?
Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison the federalist! they made papers that talked about Federalism, which was the belief that the general and regional government should be combined.
